From the Director

Last week of January! Last week of recruitment! Next week starts “FUNBRUARY” and also will be our first ever Duke IM Teaching Competition (featuring Michael Burt, Ahmad Mourad and Alex Reddy). This awesome event is planned by our very own Ann Cameron Barr and her mentor Dr. Suchita Sata! What a great way to kick off a month that needs to be renamed for FUN.

Quality and Safety is going to be such high quality next year at Duke. So excited for Duke Health System CRQS Vinay Choksi and Durham VA CRQS Michael Burt!

We are almost done with half yearly meetings! Will be getting the JAR fellowship planning nights on the books ASAP. Dr. Mitchell was able to talk before AM report on each of the threads, so please reach out to her (Jessica can help) to schedule a meeting if you are looking for mentorship for scholarly work.

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Contributed by Daniella Zipkin

Ambulatory Town Hall
One morning report session will be devoted to an Ambulatory Town Hall, led by Hannah Dzimitrowicz. One has occurred already, and two more are scheduled. This is an opportunity to debrief with your chief about all things clinic life, and share your feedback and suggestions. Please attend and be represented!

It’s 2021
And the pandemic presses on… Clinic life looks different at the different sites, because they represent vastly different payer mixes and health systems. While the VA is doubling down on telehealth for the long haul, Pickett Road is incentivized to do as much in person care as possible, and DOC is somewhere in the middle. We recognize that this variety can impact your learning, and we are strategizing how to fill the gaps. If you have thoughts on this, please share with Hannah and Dani!

Pharmacy faxes in your email
Every so often, a pharmacy or insurance company will track you down and end up sending clinical information to the fax machine in the residency office, which is currently routing to staff emails to monitor. Since these faxes can be connected to inpatients or outpatients, and the staff have no way of knowing, please (1) look at the patient’s name and (2) forward to the appropriate place, whether that is your own gen med team, the current gen med team taking care of that patient, or your clinic. Remember, your clinic has a protocol for managing all the paperwork that comes in – you don’t have to necessarily address the issue, just plug it into the system so it can be addressed over at the clinic the way other information is. When routing to your clinic, please check in with faculty or nursing leadership if you have questions about where things go. Thanks!

Harvard Medical School Panel on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Data
Harvard Medical School (HMS) has invited us to participate in a 1-hour webinar on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) data and how we can effectively use this in our clinical and healthcare efforts. This no-cost webinar will take place Wed., Jan. 27 from 12-1 p.m. Please consider attending yourselves and feel free to disseminate widely! Of note, one of the panelists, Dr. Alex Keuroghlian, was the primary faculty member who assisted us in creating the Duke/Fenway LMS modules on Providing LGBTQ+ Affirming care. I have also attached the accompanying flier, which you are welcome to use to publicize the opportunity on a website or for more information. Please note that pre-registration is required! Click for webinar registration link.

Second Look Weekend Sign-up
Please don’t forget to sign up for the URiM Second Look Weekend for applicants, and this year the event will be held virtually on Sat., Jan. 30 from 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. We are expecting dozens of URiM applicants from all of our different specialties to be in attendance, and we need your help! During the first half of the event, there will be brief remarks from institutional leaders and a resident and faculty panel. During the second half of the event, we are planning to move the applicants into breakout groups, each room with a few resident and faculty co-leaders to facilitate discussion and answer questions in a smaller group setting. If you would be willing to co-lead a breakout room, please let us know using this survey. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jeremiah Rosen (jeremiah.rosen@duke.edu).
