From the Director

A big THANK YOU to all who were helpful in our 2017-18 recruitment efforts! From residents to faculty to staff, we had tremendous support and truly appreciate everyone’s efforts in introducing our phenomenal program to the applicants (aka “future Duke residents”) who joined us to interview. This weekend will be our Under-represented in Medicine Second Look Weekend, hosted with the Duke GME Office. Many thanks in advance to the GME Office and Dr. Kimberley Evans for planning what is sure to be a fantastic weekend!

Get ready for Fun-bruary to begin! Many thanks to Erin for planning out a month filled with events and get togethers (see list below)! The month ends with our Voices in Medicine night (see details below; we are looking for storytellers), so be on the lookout for more information about all Fun-bruary events!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Matt Labriola from Eric Wei for setting the example of being a great leader on VA Gen Med, to Jeremy Cypen and Michael Murn from Sonali Bracken for exemplary end of life care for a patient on gen med, to Tanya Aylward for being an incredible day float from Megan Murray. She is always thoughtful about patients and an excellent teacher to the students. Kudos to Jackie Bolwell for a great resident report with the applicants, to Adam Brock for an awesome chair’s conference, to our My Take teams of Sipa Yankey, Tamara Saint-Surin, Toi Spates, Matt Carlisle and Brittany Gatta, and to our tour guides Maggie Moses, Jess Regan, Todd Brophy, Tamara Saint-Surin, Chris Pumill, Chris Ferreri and Meg Steiner. Kudos to Kevin Smith, ACR extroardinare, for buying pizza for the on call crew on Sunday night--it was exactly what we needed to get through from Megan Murray. And kudos to Sipa Yankey from Ashley Spann for his abstract acceptance to ACC’s 67th Annual Scientific Session for his research “Aortic Valve Replacement and Outcomes in Patients with Severe AS: Is it Black or White?”

Congratulations to Peter McCann and his wife, Jasmin, on the birth of their baby girl, Clara!

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Big changes coming in ambulatory education!!

By now many of you have heard about changes coming in Town Hall and through Dinushika and the med res team. (See also the Newsletter from January 2). Here’s a brief outline of what we are working on for July:

  • Ambulatory blocks for interns and JARs will be threads – your two week block will include clinics in specific subspecialities along with continuity clinics, academic half day, and subspecialty clinic if you’ve chosen one based on your fellowship plans.
  • In the subspecialty clinics, residents will RETURN to the same clinic approximately six times in a six month period, to give better traction in the experience and better teaching with the attendings you’ll be working with.
  • AHD will be thread specific, so the teaching will match the clinics you have during that thread
  • Interns will be exposed to EVERY sub-specialty in their first year of training, either inpatient or outpatient, via capturing the things they typically missed into the intern ambulatory threads. This may make career planning easier!
  • There are four total threads, lasting six months each, so by the end of JAR year exposure will be comprehensive.
  • Tentative groupings are:
    • Intern Thread A: GI/ID/other VA clinics
    • Intern Thread B: Renal/Rheum/Endocrine
    • JAR Thread A: Heme/Cardiology
    • JAR Thread B: Onc/Pulm

Tiered Evaluations in Ambulatory
We are about to launch a new system as a pilot at the DOC where attendings you work with less frequently can do brief evaluations on the domains they can comment on, and four core attendings (Drs. Bowlby, Greenblatt, Hemming, and Zipkin) will compile them into a collaborative summative evaluation. Stay tuned for more, launch coming soon.

Voices of Medicine

The Department of Medicine will present another staging of Voices of Medicine, a live show featuring true stories from our faculty, trainees, and staff, on Feb. 28, 2018. Learn more.

The theme of this show is humility.

Duke faculty, trainees, and staff are invited to make a story pitch. We’ll select five storytellers, and Jeff Polish, executive director of the Monti, will help you hone your story to an 8-minute gem that you will tell on stage in front of a live audience. To volunteer to tell a story, register here.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
