Internal Medicine Residency News, July 16, 2018

From the Director

First two weeks of July are in the books! I am glad to hear of everything running smoothly over the past two weeks, and I am looking forward to getting in the swing of things after our family vacation. Many thanks to the whole Med Res Team for a great start to the year.

Dr. Butterly and I are getting the new intern meetings completed over the next week or so – if you haven’t had a chance to sign up, please contact Ernest! Similarly, for JARS, please don’t forget to sign up for a semi-annual meeting with Dr. Hargett or me if you have not done so already.

Fellowship applications should be submitted for our SARs. Congrats all on getting this task done… we will be reaching out about mock interviews ASAP.

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Mike Murn and Shannon Niedermeyer from Dr. Neeru Mettu for outstanding teamwork on a very busy 9300 night, to Nicholas Koutlas from Matt Labriola for a being both efficient AND compassionate on Duke Gen Med, to Diana McNeill for making a special trip to the hospital to debrief a tough case with one of our Gen Med teams, to Hannah Dzimitrowicz who volunteered to help out as the SAR teach on 9300 and was an outstanding role model and educator for our intern, to now-neuro JAR Nate Ameri for receiving a gold star for patient care from a patient on Neurology, to Matt McCulloch from Brian Schneider for being a team player on VA Gen Med, to Hannah Dzmictrowicz and Nick Shelburne from Ruchi Doshi for their phenomenal support during the month on VA Gen Med, to Tessa Genders for going above and beyond as DRH day float from Talisha Ramchal, to Neha Kayastha from Jordan Gales for excellent cross cover management at the VA, and to Lauren Donnangelo for kicking off Chair’s Conference for 2018!

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road

Contributed by Jeff Clough

We have been excited to see many new faces in the clinic as our interns have hit the ground running. We appreciate Dr. Sherzoy for serving in a new coach role during LEAD week to help the interns get used to outpatient care. We also welcome Dr. Brandi Hernandez to Pickett. On the attending side, several providers are gearing up to use encounter specialists as we continue to experiment with ways to provide high quality care to a large and diverse patient population.

Participants are expected to attend at least 7 of the 10 sessions to receive a certificate.

If you are interested in participating, please complete the attached application and email it to Kate McDaniel (katherine.mcdaniel@duke.edu) by Monday, July 9. Enrollment decisions will be made by July 31 and the first session will be held Aug. 23.
