From the Director

It’s Physical Exam Week at noon conference! Thank you to Murat Arcasoy for planning our 8th annual PE Week! Looking forward to seeing you all there. Thanks also to the chiefs for hosting SAR Happy Hour with the Chiefs and to ResCo for kicking off the Wednesdays at Ponysaurus.

Kudos

Kudos this week to Chris Pumill for an outstanding SAR talk, to all the Duke gen med interns from the GM night residents for excellent sign outs and anticipatory guidance (and to the Gen Med SARs for teaching them!), to Dana Middleton and Mike Noujiam from Landon Brown for outstanding care of a complex oncology patient at the VA, to Joe Lerman for his awesome chair’s conference, to Joe Plaksin from Alex Sullivan for being an involved, energetic and committed dayfloat, and to Neha Kayastha from Jordan Gales for handling an AMA discharge with skill and grace.

Congrats to the SARs on getting those fellowship applications in! Please don’t hesitate to ask us if you have questions about how to handle interview scheduling.

Do you volunteer somewhere in the community?

Do you have an organization that you support that could use some help?  We are gearing up to start the monthly “Res-i-teering” opportunities – these are typically one day or night events where you can give back to the community and enjoy some time with peers while helping out. If you know an organization that can use a hand, please let me and Ernest know so that we can start planning for our first event in SEPTEMBER.

Have you signed up for SLACK?

Rumor has it that about 30 of you are missing out on the SLACK communication! As of August 1st, no residency communication will come through the paging system (yay! No noon conference page during report! No worrying if this page is an RRT or a reminder about Guasaca!). So stay in the know and get your SLACK uploaded! Questions – ask Joel Boggan who is our SLACK-master!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Tanmay Gokhale for his recent publication in PLoS Computational Biology: Microheterogeneity-induced conduction slowing and wavefront collisions govern macroscopic conduction behavior: A computational and experimental studyTanmay A. Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Contributed by Leigh Wynkoop

It’s been great welcoming our new interns to PRIME! Special thanks to the PRIME staff for helping with the snacks on orientation day, especially RN Carmen Hurst, whose Oreo balls are always a huge hit.

Check out our PRIME “Getting to Know You” bulletin board to learn things we wouldn’t guess about our interns and their most-wanted superpower – and to see cute pictures of people/pets. Don’t get on a deserted island with some of them – they chose to be with a worst enemy rather than best friend, as the enemy would be their food source….

Our other hall bulletin board has cute pictures of our four new PRIME baby boys, sons of Dr. Califano, Gil Acevedo, Sonali Bracken, and Nick Shelburne. And there are photos of our most recent WOW award recipients who were singled out by patients for exemplary patient care: Shannon Niedermeyer, Colin Smith, and Mike Grant.

Our clinic LEADS have been invaluable with helping interns with our EHR – shout out to Eric Wei, Akash Goyal, and Steve Pappas for helping everybody get orders and consults entered and notes written.

We’re looking forward to a phenomenal year of PRIME-time with all of our residents!

Leigh and Sonal

Applications are due Sept. 3. Funding begins in October.

Medical Education Leadership Track
The Office of Graduate Medical Education is excited to announce a new education opportunity for trainees PGY2 and above. The new Medical Education Leadership Track (MELT) is designed for trainees who would like to strengthen their skills as educators. The MELT curriculum will consist of 10 interactive workshops over the course of the academic year.  Each session will allow participants to practice the skill discussed and receive feedback on how to improve.  Co-curricular content will be housed and disseminated via an online platform. Participants are expected to attend at least 7 of the 10 sessions to receive a certificate.

If you are interested in participating, please complete the attached application and email it to Kate McDaniel (katherine.mcdaniel@duke.edu) by Monday, July 9. Enrollment decisions will be made by July 31 and the first session will be held Aug. 23.
