From the Director
The first month is (basically) in the books! Very impressive start to the year by all. Thanks to Tara Holder for starting the pick-up football already and to the ResCo for the Ponysaurus Wednesdays.
If you didn’t get a chance to go to Dr. Ken Goldberg’s Grand Rounds on Friday, it is worth the watch online! A fantastic overview of the VA mission, with some great shout-outs to many legends of Duke. An additional thank you to Murat Arcasoy for arranging the 8th Annual Physical Exam week at noon conference, as well as to our “models” Matt Labriola and Chris Ferreri for helping out.
Looking forward to the SAR class party from the Charity Auction at our house Friday night! SARs, please RSVP – we hope to see you there!

Kudos this week go to Chris Zheng from Anmol Singh for outstanding cross cover at the VA, to Vinay Choksi from Anmol Singh for awesome work at the VA, to Matt Tucker from Jessie Gu for helping with a patient in the MICU, and to Jasmine Washington for receiving TWO different appreciation notes from veterans for her compassionate care. Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Ambulatory Threads Roll Out
This year we have launched a new longitudinal system of linking +2 blocks in clinical threads for better continuity in the subspecialty clinics, as well as matching Academic Half Day didactics to the clinical themes you’re doing. For a full description of the threads, please see the June 25th Residency Newsletter linked here.
Huge shout outs go to Emily Richbourg in the residency office for handling the granular details of the schedule with so much skill, and to Winn Seay for taking over the Chief reigns on this project and troubleshooting new issues right off the bat.
As with all new things, there are unexpected issues and gaps here and there. We appreciate your patience as we smooth out the kinks. Ambulatory happens in a lot of different places and there are A LOT of moving parts. The threads were built with the sub-specialists’ schedules in mind, and those schedules change. If you encounter a problem, if a clinic isn’t happening when or where you expect it to or you can’t reach a faculty member, please reach out to Winn, Emily, and Dani Zipkin right away.
So far, we are hearing some positive feedback overall from residents and faculty, and evaluation forms will be coming to you roughly twice in a 6-month period to give more. We’d like to hear ALL of your feedback, negative and positive, so we can respond promptly. Thanks in advance for sharing!

PWIM Welcomes Interns
The Program for Women in Medicine invites all interns to the first annual PWIM Welcome Event, a social networking event to provide you with an opportunity to meet some of the other women in your field. Please join us at Fullsteam Brewery on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 6:30-8 p.m. Food and drinks will be provided.
2018 Stead Resident Research Grant applications
The program invites residents to apply for a 2018 Stead Resident Research Grant. The applications are due on September 3, 2018 for a funding start date to be determined in October 2018. See email for application instructions, forms, and sample NIH biosketch are attached. Please include your mentor’s NIH Biosketch and support letter.
The REACH Health Equity Center is offering funding for resident research
The Research Scholars Development Program supports health disparities research and is a funding opportunity for residents and fellows. Trainees are required to work with a faculty mentor to develop a research proposal to bring together faculty across disciplines who have a common interest in addressing racial and ethnic disparities in the clinical encounter. Applications are due Sept. 3. Funding begins in October.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources.
