Internal Medicine Residency News, June 1, 2020

From the Director

It has been a hard week on top of a very challenging and devastating spring.  Whether it is the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor or countless others, or the blatant role of longstanding societal racism in affecting the outcomes of individuals and families in the face of COVID, we need to do better. Members of our DukeFamily and our patients are hurting. We have power as individuals and as doctors to actively promote social justice, to challenge discrimination in any form and to actively work to listen, learn, and act to combat discrimination and inequity.

Thank you to all for taking time to think and commit to how we can do our parts to make our program a safe haven and to make our society one of true equality. There are many kudos this week of people going above and beyond to care for patients and to work as teams in busy and challenging floors, ICUs and clinics, just as you always seem to do regardless of what the circumstance. Thank you all for showing up and caring for our patients, their loved ones and each other.

My best,
Aimee

Welcome back to DOC!
The regular schedule starts today, and we are so excited to have you all join us again!

Thank you for the awesome care of our patients by those of you who were here the past few months, as well as all the work you all did from home—calls, inbox, and more!

And sadly, also that time of year that we say goodbye to the SARs.

Thank you for your amazing work, and we will miss you!!

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
