From the Director

It’s block 12, the countdown is on for the end of AY2017-18 and the beginning of AY2018-19. Keep your eyes out on the calendar for events as well as reminders for end-of-year/beginning-of-year paperwork.

For rising SARs who are applying to fellowship – ERAS for last year closed out on May 31 so I anticipate that this week they will release fellowship application official dates for “ERAS 2019” which is your application season. Once ERAS 2019 opens, you can get your token and begin to upload your application documents.  In ERAS is where you will also get your documents to assign to your letter writers so they can upload letters. We will send out a more detailed email once ERAS opens, but keep your eyes out for that this week.

For graduating SARs, we are looking forward to seeing you and your guest at the SAR dinner on Friday. Please also keep up with your procedure logs if you haven’t already and make sure you are taking care of unsigned documents or un-attended to labs and results in your in-baskets and CPRS.

For rising JARs, Ernest will be sending out the calendar to set up end of year “semi-annual’ meetings with Bill or me this week. Looking forward to meeting and talking about JAR year!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Sam Lindner for an outstanding Grand Rounds! Also kudos to Josh Lee for his fantastic SAR talk! Kudos to Jordan Gales from Bryan Golubski for coverage on 9100 service, and kudos to Meg Steiner from Joe Plaksin for going above and beyond for some very sick VA patients as the dayfloat yesterday. Congratulations to Michael Grant and Joelle Nitzburg on their wedding this past weekend! #Dukefamily extends past your time here! Take a look at our Duke team at ASCO this week! 

Did you know? Together with the DOM, we have created a new position for clinician educators in the DOM! Each Division has selected “Educational Leads” who will partner with us to develop and maintain curriculum for each rotation on our SOON TO BE RELEASED curriculum website! Instead of getting an email from medhub, you will be able to check the rotation website for the nitty-gritty details of where to be AND curricular resources to get you started on the rotation. We are excited to work with Stephen Bergin, Talal Dahhan, Micah McClain, Carly Kelley, John Roberts, Ara Metjian, Christina Costa, Megan McNamara, Laura Caputo, Nilesh Patel and a few more “players to be named later” on making our curriculum accessible and relevant, improved and to bring more great people into the residency education team.

This week for Grand Rounds features VA Chief Resident and dad-very-soon-to-be Marc Samsky. Please be sure to be there to support Marc.

  • Pulmonary x1 clinic/ month
  • Endo weekly
  • PT weekly

Coming soon:

  • CKD/Renal   once a month
  • Secondary Palliative—for more complex patients
  • I am doing Primary Palliative—for GOC (goals of care) or symptom management
  • Geriatrics likely
  • Derm—occasional clincs for Hydranitis suppertiva—first one this 5/21 —awesome!

Just write on the followup section, don’t need an official referral

2. Amy Pollock, our front desk supervisor (SAM --Service access manager) left on Thurs 5/31. Kelly, Team lead, will step in with Christen as her supervisor. Any front desk/patient, etc. issues--feel free to let me know.

If you don't have a room and patients are here, let the nursing staff and/or attendings know.

Candace, our Pharm Tech, is temporarily the link to ordering meds directly from the Pharma companies for our pts who qualify.

3. Primary  palliative care: I am seeing pts for GOC (goals of care) or symptom management..just have pt booked to me, and have note reflect the needs.

4. New Interns! Orientation Wed., June 27, in AM....feel free to stop by if you would like!

5. HomeBASE and HIDOC continuing with both care managers..Marigny and Laurie. We are working on, of course, continuing innovation!

Larry and I are continuing to accept pts with OUD for consideration of suboxone. 

Val and Julia, NPs, continue to do a lot of the walkins an complex pts. 

Dr. Jaleel of Derm is  giving Hidradenitis Suppurativa grand rounds at Duke South 3rd floor conference room across from purple elevators this Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. All are invited! She is coming periodically to the DOC now!

Lots of things going on--studies on board outside my office, including a suboxone study we are doing, the van is no longer working,

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
