Internal Medicine Residency News, March 12, 2018

From the Director

OUCH! Daylight savings time hurts, unless you were working overnight on the shortest night of the year. This week also brings us MATCH WEEK – very much looking forward to learning who our awesome new interns are and celebrating with everyone on Friday. Be on the look out for the March Madness brackets as well!

This week should open our ACGME survey – you will receive an email from Lynsey that gives you instructions on how to access your link to the survey.  While the link is personal, the results are 100% anonymous. Thanks in advance for your participation.

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Leah Machen for her excellent SAR talk as well as Mike Grant for an fantastic chair’s conference with faculty discussants Jennifer Perkins and Murat Arcasoy. Other kudos come from Amy Lee to Shannon Niedermeyer, Petra Brayo, Katie Wood and Anmol Singh for hard work and care of very complex patients during the day and overnight on VA Gen Med, to Matt Tucker and Filley Howe from Matt Labriola for their support of patients, families and the teams in the face of a very, very sick MICU, and to Bryan Golubski, Melodi Whitley, Juan Magana and Manisha Bhattacharya from Kara Wegermann for their care of multiple patients with very complicated liver disease, as well as from Kara to Kyle Guerink, Claudia Leung, Martin Weiss and Tanya Aylward for excellent care of more patients on the hepatology service. Also kudos to Kyle Geurink for being a great partner, Manisha Bhattacharya for adding insightful questions to our patient's overall care plan, as well as a belated kudos to Juan  Magana, Landon Brown, and Kelly Ground for running at tight ship in the VA MICU – from Bryan Golubski.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Wynn Hunter for his interview in a round table discussion on price transparency and it’s impact on healthcare costs in “Leadership,” a publication of the Healthcare Financial Management Association http://www.hfma.org/Templates/leadership/Content.aspx?Pageid=28003&id=59517.

Have a great (MATCH) week!

Aimee

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road

Contributed by Sharon Rubin

Pickett Road is sad to see Dr. Audrey Metz leave for Executive Health this week. She has done great work as a resident here and as an attending. Her patients will miss her the most. She was a wonder teacher for the resident clinic. We wish her the best of luck with her new position!

We have had fun events these past few months. February was Heart Disease awareness month, and staff had opportunities to dress in red. Yoga has been going strong and our next event is Friday, March 30, which is open to anyone interested. Just bring your yoga mat for the 5:30 class taught by our DPC Depression care manager Zia Ward. Friday, March 9, was Cereal Day and we celebrated with a flashback to childhood breakfast. On March 12, we will be celebrating national Pie Day with assortment of pies at our all-staff meeting. We have almost completed the 22 photos and video interviews for all the residents here to be seen on the Duke Health website. Many of the residents are completing this on their LEAD week, in addition to learning population health and strategies for depression from our care managers. We are looking forward to spring and planting vegetables and plants in our Pickett Road Gardens.
