From the Director

It is a new and challenging time for all of us.  Can’t say enough how much we appreciate everyone’s patience and hard work as we navigate what is truly a new reality.

Thanks to everyone for continuing to take care of each other (and yourselves).

Lots of questions about planning schedules and conferences for the near future – please look for an update tonight from the chiefs and me as we sort through the innumerable details.

Kudos
Kudos this week from Caroline Sloan to Anthony Horton, Alex Sullivan and Matt Carlisle all went above and beyond to cover for sick co-residents on DRH GM while also performing their already scheduled duties, to Cindy Pabon from Sean Taasan for helping out on call, and to Alyssa Stavig from Steve Telloni for going above and beyond to take care of patients and communicate on Duke NF.  I know there are more, so please keep sending them in. Also kudos to the whole VA weekend power outage crew!!

On a lighter note than our current major concern, kudos to Allen Witt, who with Dr. Isbey determined that a patient needed rabies shots after trapping a raccoon (which was not the reason he came in!). The Veteran sent a secure message online to express his gratitude in a very charming manner:

Subject:  I want to thank everyone...nurses, doctors & ER

So I come in because my throat is oddly bothering me, and I end up getting treated for rabies!

If I wouldn't have come in I could very well be walking around with untreated rabies right now! I have never been fond of TAPS [bugle song played at military funerals] especially if it is for me.

Here is the kicker, my throat now feels much better!

I had my day 4 shot today in the ER and spoke at great length with Karen Hall from the 8th floor and will get the next two shots there on the 27th & 5th.

I just wanted to thank you all for your eye for detail, professionalism, and courtesy. I have had wonderful care in many ways the last 5 years, and I wish I had gone to the VA decades ago.

When I was in the ER waiting to get the first 3 shots I wrote this poem (I'm a writer, and have written for 8 magazines).

THE REVENGE OF ROCKY RACCOON

Rocky Raccoon stepped into my trap

Only to find the flap… closed behind him

          He said with a grin

          I may not win

But I'll send this old Nam Vet far

Maybe even to VA ER!

Whoever reads this please send it to the ER folks - this was my third trip there and with a guy like me working on the farm - they all will have job security!

Thanks again,
xxxx

PS: God is Good...I'm thinking He gave me the throat concern so I would end up getting treated for rabies...can't prove it, but I am a blessing counter from way back.
