Internal Medicine Residency News, March 21st, 2022

From the Director

What a week! We had a great family vacation and got to learn who the newest members of the Duke Fam are! We’ve all reasonably recovered from what may be the last Daylight Savings Time Switch and are now officially in the start of Spring.  Happy Holi to those who celebrate, as well as a joyous Norwuz as well.

Last week was also marked by a wildly successful Second Annual Duke It Out with huge kudos to Ann Cameron Barr (and Dr. Suchita Sata) as well as our competitors Sitharhan “Victory” Sekar, Hannah Florian and Sean Taasan as well as our coaches Drs. Jenny Van Kirk, Jon Roberts and Laura Caputo

Kudos

We have an overwhelming plethora of kudos today! Kudos to Jake Nast from Alissa Stavig (from a patient’s family) for spending extra time at the bedside explaining the plan of care, to Garret Johnson and Erin Hercules for being accepted to the MLP-R program, also to Garret Johnson from the DOC team for being a tremendous DOC Lead last week (and added tacos from Peggy Sahu for helping manage a very busy day), to Tyler Couch for a fantastic LEADS conference, to Erin Song and Zach Lorsch for a great SAR talks, to Jordan Infield from Elissa Rumer Nickolopoulos for taking extra care to ensure a patient with delirium was comfortable in the hospital, to David Bader from Dr. Marie Rosier, Mary Jo Obeid and Lauren Pinion from Dr Caroline Sloan for absolutely amazing work on a very busy and very sick night at DRH, and to Lynette Staplefoote-Boynton for stepping in to take a volunteer shift at Lincoln CHC (from Jo Cavalier). Also kudos to Apurva Khedagi, Daniel Travis and Erin Hercules from Nijat Aliyev for providing great care at the VA, to Priyanka Reddy from Bari Rosenberg for being a fantastic MICU call buddy, to Forrest Gamble (also from Nijat) for going the extra mile to care for a sick veteran, to Sarah Moserowitz and Lynette Staplefoot-Boynton for being amazing co-JARs in the MICU (also from Bari), and right back to Bari and Lynette from Sarah Moserowitz for taking great care of co-residents (and patients) in the MICU.

Pubmed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Sukrit Jain and Sriya Muralidharan for their upcoming abstract at DDW.. Impact of GI/Hepatology Consultation on Outcomes for Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis. Jain SS, Muralidharan S, Patel Y. DDW Annual Conference. 2022

Have a great (70 degree! Sunny!) week,

Aimee

Clinic Corner: PRIME

ALL residents (not just PRIME): we highly recommend the CPRS booster to speed up signing, cosigning, etc. STAR menu > DUR Shortcuts > open CPRS Booster > type CTRL + H >watch the 13” minute video if you want guidance. NEW: Booster allows dot phrases!!! Still in development. You can start making your own stock text (such as your exam).

LEAD residents Shannon McGue and Timothy Hopper (with added input from Shivy Chandramouli) have made a powerpoint of CPRS tips and tricks for inpatient as well as PRIME – including CPRS Booster; we will work on uploading that to wiki and can email it to anyone who wants it.

PRIME-Return Appointment note has been updated/ simplified. Be sure to use it. Coming: a few minor tweaks to that note plus revisions to other notes.

LEADs have been working on compiling info on weight-loss medication options at the VA for our patients (more info to come) and GDMT for patients with HFrEF.

Welcome to MSA Keimarsha “Kei” Fitzgerald who will be taking on MSA duties for Teams J, K, L, Q, and R due to Michelle Dunston’s departure.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
