Quit on the Go 
“The ‘Quit on the Go’ Trial will be expanding its recruitment efforts in the Duke Outpatient Clinic with the introduction of a new research-specific Maestro Care Best Practice Alert (BPA). ‘Quit on the Go’ is a Duke research study evaluating smoking cessation apps that help those with serious mental illness quit smoking. The ‘Quit on the Go’ research team pre-screens the medical records to identify potentially eligible patients who have upcoming appointments at the clinic.

This BPA will be used by clinic providers and rooming staff to communicate with our research staff about particular patients. Someone from the research team may request that you approach your patient to ask them if they are interested in participating in the study. Utilizing this BPA tool will facilitate this process with you simply indicating your patient’s response with a quick two-click response of “Interested”, “Declined”, or “Not Eligible”. Your response to this BPA will be automatically be communicated to the research team, who can then follow up with your patient to screen and possibly enroll them into the study. We look forward to working with you.

Speaking of studies, check bulletin board near my office, am posting info on our studies. IMPAC is the PT one, Dr. Greenblatt and I are doing a suboxone one, and there are more coming.

3/23/18 is our 1/2 day planning session to develop our mission statement and strategic plan. Stay tuned for more info as to what we develop, and thanks for doing the very very short survey!

NEW: Please call the no shows for hospital followups, to improve our show rate, and help the pts keep those important followup appointments.

Flu Action comm at the DOC
Dr. Greenblatt, Dr. Mitchell and I are working on our flu stragies, from shots to treatment..there are no ambulatory Duke policies, feel free to contribute, after this flu season we are thinking of next year!

SARs should have NO new patients and be thinking of the 10 patients for a warm hand off. Stay tuned for more transition plans as you prepare to leave your patients.

Yesterday I went to the funeral of one of our patients. Substance abuse death in man who had been clean for several years. A reminder of how powerful our work  is with so many patients, and as I looked around the packed worship hall, thought again what a small window we have into the complex lives of our patients.

One final note: we have a lost stethoscope, here at DOC for the past several weeks, a black Littman 2.

Califf Medicine Resident Research Award
The annual Califf Medicine Resident Research Award competition abstracts are due on April 30, 2018.Awards presentation will take place on May 18, 2018 between 7-9 a.m. in Searle Center Lecture Hall.

Abstracts (300 word) and supporting mentor's letter are due on April 30, 2018. All abstracts submitted for competition will also be presented as posters. The top 3 abstracts will be selected by a faculty committee for the Califf Research Awards and these research projects will be presented as 15 minute talks 8-9 a.m.

Two best poster awards will be selected (Research poster and QI poster) by the Chief Residents during the poster viewing session prior to Grand Rounds.

We invite all of you to present your scholarly activities as posters (we can send you poster templates):

1. Basic, clinical, medical education, and translational research projects
2. Case studies / vignettes including ACP posters from 2018
3. QI projects
4. Please plan on presenting your posters posters that you have presented previously at a national scientific meeting

To discuss any issues related to the application process or once you have decided to submit an abstract, please e-mail murat.arcasoy@duke.edu to declare your intention to submit, your research mentor's name and the title of your poster.  Please contact the MedRes office staff (Ms. Tia Williams) for assistance with the poster preparation process.

GIM Resident Research Award
The Division of General Internal Medicine is pleased to announce the first annual GIM Resident Research Award! Please see details below. Applications will be accepted through March 30, 2018.

Eligibility:
Internal Medicine residents (categorical, medicine-pediatrics, medicine-psychiatry)
Research that was initiated during tenure as a resident

Submission Categories:
One award will be given annually. Submissions can be either:
Clinical Research
Quality Improvement

Submissions should be relevant to primary care, general internal medicine, or hospital medicine. Areas of focus can include patient-centered interventions, disparity populations, population management, systems evaluation or re-design, or health care policy.

Submissions should be under 800 words and should include:

• Name of primary investigator and co-investigators
• Name of other faculty mentors involved in the project
• Description of project including objectives, population, methods/intervention, and outcomes if available.
• Discussion of lessons learned, one paragraph
• Attach copies or links to any published abstracts or manuscripts related to the work

Please submit your materials to Robin Byrd, robin.byrd@duke.edu, via email attachment by March 30, 2018. Blinded committee review will take place in April.

The top selected projects will be invited to present their work at a DGIM research meeting in May 2018, to be announced. The winner of the top rated project will receive a $500 honorarium. We look forward to seeing your submissions!

 

 

School of Medicine Blood Drive
The School of Medicine will host a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross on Thur., March 8, from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Trent Semans Center.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant
The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018
