Internal Medicine Residency News, May 14, 2018

From the Director

Happy Mother’s Day to all our DukeFamily moms!  Hopefully everyone had fun this weekend at the Stead Dim Sum night! We have an after-work open house at the Crowley’s on Friday – RSVP if you are able so that the good Drs. Steve and AnnaLisa Crowley can plan for enough food and drink!

This Friday, May 18, is RESIDENT RESEARCH GRAND ROUNDS, so make your plans to come to the Searle Center, have some breakfast, view your colleagues posters and see our residents present their work. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Grand Rounds next Friday with a visiting Greenfield Professor!

Many thanks to Dr. Bonike Oloruntoba and Dr. Kim Evans for developing and sponsoring the event "EMBRACE YOUR INNER PITCH: The Art of Tactful Self Promotion & Smart Positioning for Trainee" through the MRRC. Trainees from multiple area residency programs and schools were in attendance – fantastic work!!!!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Phil Liu for his excellent SAR talk, to Kent Feng for an awesome chair’s conference, to Mike Murn and Tamara Saint-Surin from Karen Barnard for outstanding “veteran-centered” care on VA GM, to Josh Lee the younger from David Sterken for fantastic patient and family care for a patient who needed to be transferred to the MICU, to Rachel Feder from Bimal Shah and Josh Vessey at DRH for recognizing a very sick patient at DRH and initiating transfer, and to Gil Acevedo and Corey Bradley for helping with the How To Be A JAR session last week!!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Sonali Bracken for her recent article: Bracken SJ, Adami AJ, Rafti E, Schramm CM, Matson AP. “Regulation of IgE in an Experimental Model of Inhalational Tolerance via the Formation of IgG anti-IgE/IgE Immune Complexes”. Clin Mol Allergy. Accepted May 8, 2018.

Have a great week!

Resident Wellness Initiative Grants
Resident Wellness Initiative Grants for resident-led, innovative projects are dedicated to promote the well-being of our residents, which is of utmost importance to our Program.

The proposed initiatives may be designed to promote resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

  1. Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded
  2. Funding start date is July 1, 2018
  3. Each proposal must be led by one or more SARs (current JARs) during the 2018-2019 academic year. Extension of funding may be requested next year beyond June 30, 2019
  4. Teamwork is encouraged to include rising JARs and incoming interns. Multiple SARs may lead one project
  5. Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required
  6. Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.
  7. The 2-page proposals are due on June 1, 2018 for review by an award selection committee
  8. Applications forms are attached.
