Internal Medicine Residency News, May 21, 2018

From the Director

The busy time of year continues!  This week  marked the ACLT trip to D.C., highlighted also in the GIM eNews and led by Dani Zipkin and Alex Cho. We are very proud of this great effort to lobby on behalf of our patients AND to teach physician advocacy. We closed out the week with a fantastic Resident Research Grand Rounds and poster display (thank you to Murat Arcasoy for planning and to Ernest McCowan, Lynsey Michnowicz, Emily Richbourg, Kerri Shore and Tia Williams for helping get everything set up – it’s a huge job!).  Many thanks to Steve and AnnaLisa Crowley for hosting the Stead Faculty and Resident open house on Friday night – great turnout despite the downpour and lots of fun had by all. And finally, a celebration for our awesome chiefs was held on Saturday.

Congratulations to Tsion Aberra on her engagement to Barrington Quarrie!

Welcome to the DUKE FAMILY to Amelie Mumm Kim, newest member of the Mumm-Kim family! Congratulations to Azalea, Andy and Big Brother Avery!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Ben Ranard for an outstanding chair’s conference, to Emily Kinsey for her fantastic SAR talk, to Matt Tucker from Anish Baditjaya and Madhu Eluri for being a patient teacher of procedures, to Nicole Pristera from Madhu and Anish as well for outstanding leadership during a patient code, to Joe Plaksin from Sarah Nouri for stepping up and covering at LCHC on Wednesday when weather kept Sarah from being able to get out of her flooded street, to Shannon Niedermeyer from Colby Feeney for outstanding overnight care of a sick patient, and to Josh Lee (the younger!) from David Sterken for tremendous patient centered care for a sick VA patient.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to our speakers and poster winners from Resident Research Day!  Congratulations to our Califf Award winners Jared Lowe, Azalea Kim, Becca Lumsden and Claire Smith!  And to our poster winners Annie Reihman, Sipa Yankey, Megan Dupuis and JP ShoupFull descriptions of research day can be found here.

Have a great week!

Aimee

Resident Wellness Initiative Grants
Resident Wellness Initiative Grants for resident-led, innovative projects are dedicated to promote the well-being of our residents, which is of utmost importance to our Program.

The proposed initiatives may be designed to promote resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

  1. Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded
  2. Funding start date is July 1, 2018
  3. Each proposal must be led by one or more SARs (current JARs) during the 2018-2019 academic year. Extension of funding may be requested next year beyond June 30, 2019
  4. Teamwork is encouraged to include rising JARs and incoming interns. Multiple SARs may lead one project
  5. Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required
  6. Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.
  7. The 2-page proposals are due on June 1, 2018 for review by an award selection committee
  8. Applications forms are attached.
