From the Director

We are really getting down to the wire here on 2018-19.  Please pay attention to the calendar and emails from the Med Res Office for all of the end of year (and beginning of the year) information.

While many of us had a quieter day than usual with Memorial Day on Monday, it is always a good moment to remember the privilege we have to care for our Veterans at the DVAMC, and that the day is a difficult one for many. 

Please don’t forget to mark your calendars for John Paul Shoup’s Grand Rounds on Friday! And a picnic for the Chiefs this weekend!

Kudos this week go to Katie Pollard for an outstanding Chair’s Conference, to Casey Sullivan for tackling endocarditis is a super SAR talk, to Shaki Salvador from the VA Social Work team for her outstanding communication with a patient and family, and to our new ResCo Chairs and Resco – Chairs Joe Lerman, Keva Garg and Nancy Yang, as well as class reps - rising SARs Lauren Donnangelo, Tamara Saint-Surin, Sheila Sherzoy, and Alex Sullivan; rising JARS Tanmay Gokhale, Payton Kendsersky, Cassie Lautredou, and Ahmad Mourad; from Med-Peds Ruchi Doshi and Henry Foote; and Med-Psych's Pete McCann! This week’s Pubmed from the Program goes to our residents who represent Duke IM Residency in the Learning Health System Training Program Graduating Class – Corey Bradley, Mike Murn, Sheila Sherzoy, Becca Lumsden, Jordan Gales, and Matt McCulloch! They tackled projects including improving PCN skin testing, identifying risk of CVD in women with high risk pregnancies, hypertension control in DPC, improving end of life care in ALS, quantifying ED and urgent care use in DPC patients and identifying high risk patients/simplifying lipid reporting in Maestro. Great work to all – your presentations were spectacular.​

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Gearing up for next year!
The ambulatory threads will continue next year for interns and JARs. Academic Half Day will continue to be thread-specific. Morning report will expand to include a more robust general medicine curriculum. The “CEX” observations will be renamed to “observed encounters,” and we will establish more clear expectations on those observations at the beginning of next year. Things are humming right along!

Attendance during Ambulatory
As with every rotation, if you are scheduled to be in a clinic on a particular day, we expect you to show up. If you are not able to be there, please notify the chiefs, myself, or other program leadership ahead of time so we can notify the clinic of your absence. Sub-specialty attendings are planning for your presence and adjusting their workflow to incorporate you into their clinics, and we want to respect their time.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
