From the Director

Wow! Countdown to Thanksgiving! Can’t believe it. Many thanks to Harvey Cohen for donating basketball tickets this past weekend so some residents could witness Duke annihilate their competition two nights in a row! We are looking forward to getting together with everyone either at the Turkey Bowl or in the Med Res library after the game for our Thanksgiving feast, sponsored by the DoM (Thanks, Dr. Rogers!). Also many thanks to those who have donated to our Thanksgiving food drive – please send along donations to Erin Payne if you would like! Our donations will help families from our clinics celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Kudos

Res-i-teering with Habitat for Humanity happened this past weekend! Way to go Social Action team for putting this together. Kudos also this week to Claire Smith for a spectacular chair’s conference, to Megan Dupuis for kicking off the Res Report with applicants with a fantastic presentation, to our My Take stars Kyle Guerink, Irena Tan, Dan Maselli, Sipa Yankey, Matt Labriola and Matt Carlisle, and to our tour guides as well. Kudos to Becca Lumsden from Stephanie Garbarino for holding the DOC pager while she was post call to get some much needed sleep and to Mike Murn from Stephanie Garbarino for bringing hot chocolate and breakfast every post call day in the CCU. Also kudos to Godefrey Chery from Megan Dupuis for making a challenging diagnosis, and to Chery, Hysem Eldik and Kristin Batich from Meg Dupuis for being amazing physicians who make her job easy on Duke Gen Med! And a shout out to Matt Tucker from Nicole Helmke for a great psych history complete with collateral for a GM12 admission overnight!

PubMed from the Program

Today’s pubmed from the program goes to Julia Xu for her recent grant award from the Cooley's Anemia Foundation for a project entitled "Thalassemia Screening in Myanmese and Lao Migrants in Thailand."

And to our very own Murat Arcasoy for his award, as well, "An Open-Label, Randomized, Phase 2 Dose-Finding Study of Pacritinib in Patient with Thrombocytopenia and Primary Myelofibrosis, Post-Polycythemia Vera Myelofibrosis, or Post-Essential Thrombocythemia Myelofibrosis Previously Treated with Essential."

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road

At Pickett Road we have increased our staff and have much improvement in clinic. 

Our Duke Primary Care Managers have been added to our clinic. They are nurses who operate the Depression Management for all of Duke Primary Care. Elizabeth "Zia" Ward is the nurse who helps the Pickett Road patients. She will be another resource during our LEAD week where residents can learn coaching and therapy techniques to teach their patients. They help with medication management and with coaching and counseling for our patients. We have a new lab technician Shannon Eastwood who will be training and then running our lab. We have added Megan Donahue as PSA to help at the front desk and medical records. We are looking forward to our Thanksgiving celebration this week November 16th with all of our new staff.

2018 Duke Health Annual Quality and Safety Call for Abstracts

All interested Duke Health and Duke affiliated health care professionals, including GME trainees and Duke Health professions students, are invited tosubmit projects for the poster session. 

The deadline for all abstract submissions is Mon., Nov. 27, 2017 by 5 p.m.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
