Internal Medicine Residency News, Nov. 2, 2020

From the Director

Doctoberfest 2020 is in the books! Check out our Duke IM Residency Instagram for fun photos of Friday trick or treat candy rounds! Now we are digging in to November and getting ready to kick off both the first VIRTUAL STEAD TREAD (although it is the 9th annual Stead Tread) as well as the first ever 100 percent virtual Duke IM Residency Recruitment! Your participation is VITAL to our success! Don’t forget to sign up for all the ways large and small that you can help us recruit the most awesome class for our 2021-22 interns. Crazy!

Congratulations to our very own APD Dr. Jenny Van Kirk on her promotion to Assistant Professor! And to Dr. Joel Boggan for his selection for the GIM Research Mentoring Award and to trainee PWIM liason Dr. Suchita Shah Sata for her selection for the GIM Excellence in Education award. REPRESENT!

No Duke Medicine LEADS conference tomorrow so that there is more time to VOTE if you have not. Check in with any member of program leadership, if you have not yet voted and need to go on Nov 3.

GET YOUR  FLU SHOT. Seriously. Time is running out for compliance with this important Duke Health requirement. The Searle Center (that is the building next to the courtyard by Nosh…) is a great option as is EOHW. Tia will  be emailing you today, if you haven’t  gotten this yet. Make her job easy and GET YOUR SHOT.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Rabab Ali for an amazing Cohen conference and Micah Schub for an equally awesome SAR talk. Kudos also to Tareq Aljurf from Lena Eder for excellent work on Night Float, to Sarah Greene from Monroe Wolf for amazing care of a patient in the CICU - above and beyond, to Nathan Hirshman from Ryan Keane for also managing the busiest CICU night, to Yuxi Zheng for her Day in the Life Instagram story, to Joel Boggan from Aaron Hein for being a superb attending, to Ryan Keane from Sarah Greene for excellent supervision in the CICU, to Sam Rauch from Tanziyah Muqeem for being the best VA JAR, to Marge DeOliviera, Sarah Greene, Hubie Haywood, Cassie Lautredou and Nick Ashur from Bari Rosenberg for being the first resident entrants to the Stead Tread!

Duke SCI-StARR Pathway
The Duke SCI-StARR pathway (Science Clinician Investigator - Stimulating Access to Research in Residency) supports protected time funded by an R38 award for research for residents in the Departments of Medicine who are committed to a career as a physician investigator in academic medicine. All Residents in the R38 SCI-StARR program will have a primary research mentor in either laboratory-based basic science research or clinical research.  In addition, a Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) will meet with each resident in the program at least twice per year and help the trainee create an individualized development plan. Application Deadline:  Nov. 30, 2020.

Call for applications: UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship
The UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship was founded in 2018 and received ACGME accreditation in April 2019. The fellowship is supported by both the NC Department of Human and Health Services (NC DHHS) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to train 8 Addiction Medicine physicians annually. The vision of the UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship is to expand capacity for addiction treatment in North Carolina, with emphasis on training physicians in team-based care with an understanding of how to provide high quality addiction treatment to underserved populations. The fellowship is designed to prepare graduates for careers in community-based or academic Addiction Medicine and provides training in team-based care in multiple settings, including detox, pain management, inpatient consults, UNC Horizons (a residential substance use program for pregnant and parenting women), and outpatient treatment.  New in 2020, fellows will have a community-telehealth rotation, where they will train at one of five FQHC partnering training sites, providing addiction treatment in community based settings with significant need for OUD treatment. Learn more.

The UNC Addiction Medicine fellowship is currently accepting applications through ERAS for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
