From the Director

It’s almost here! Turkey bowl, and the post-bowl residency gathering! Secret plays are being drawn up. T-shirts are ordered. Smack is being talked. Looking forward to a fun and injury-free Thanksgiving day game with you all.

Our very big thanks from the entire program to Dr. Chris Hostler for organizing and to Dr. Steven Pappas, Major Thomas W. Payne II, Dr. Jon Andrews, and MSG Aaron Wood for sharing their stories with us in a phenomenal Veteran’s Day noon conference.  We all learned a tremendous amount from you, and thank you for your candor, bravery and time.

We are finally ready to send out the signups for semi-annual evaluations with Bill Hargett and me. Please take time to read the information and we look forward to meeting with each of you!

Congratulations to Duke IM alum and next year’s DRH chief Winn Seay – Winn married anesthesia resident Theresa Crowgey this weekend! A beautiful wedding and great dukefam reunion! And congratulations to Joy Bhosai on her engagement!!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Hi everyone -

I wanted to take a moment to introduce you to Alicia Watkins,  our new pharmacist that has joined our team in PRIME. Alicia grew up in Utah and completed her undergraduate and pharmacy studies at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT. Following pharmacy school, she completed a year-long pharmacy practice residency with UNC in eastern North Carolina followed by a second year specialty residency in Geriatrics at the Durham VA HCS. She is excited to be working with patients in PRIME Med Management Clinic and will also be assisting with PRIME HEDIS metrics and population management via phone interventions.

PRIME Med Management Clinic is available on Mon. and Tues. morning and Wed all day. Patients can be referred to Med Management clinic for conditions such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperthyroidism, etc. to assist with getting patients to their goals, changing/ordering medications, and ordering or following up on labs as appropriate. Patients may also be referred for assistance with medication adherence problems. You can place an order for PRIME pharmacy under the Primary Care Screen Quick text orders, option #4.
List of possible reasons for referral:

  • chronic disease state management (DM, HTN, HLD, COPD, smoking cessation, etc.)
  • shared medical appointments (group visits)
  • clinical questions and drug information resource
  • assistance with the VA formulary
  • transitions of care/medication reconciliation
  • identification of high risk patients from panel/population management using VSSC and other reports
  • educational in-services

Please stop by and introduce yourself when you are next in PRIME clinic. 

Susan Bullard, who has been our clinical pharmacist since PRIME's inception, is transitioning to a leadership role in Pharmacy and therefore will not be our PRIME pharmacist anymore - but we will be happy to still see her around and wish her the best in her new position. She will be missed!

2018 Duke Health Annual Quality and Safety Call for Abstracts

All interested Duke Health and Duke affiliated health care professionals, including GME trainees and Duke Health professions students, are invited tosubmit projects for the poster session. 

The deadline for all abstract submissions is Mon., Nov. 27, 2017 by 5 p.m.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018
