From the Director

Recruitment is in full swing! Our first day went great, and by the time you read this, the second day will be well under way!  We really enjoyed having everyone over Friday for the recruitment party despite the marginal weather.  Many thanks to Ernest, Emily, Tia, Sandra and Lynsey for all the help getting the party together.

It’s getting closer to Turkey Bowl, and I hope the beautiful weather helped everyone get in some great practice time. Please check out the emails from Murat about meeting to discuss research/scholarly opportunities, as well, as how to submit cases and posters to the North Carolina ACP meeting.  It’s in Raleigh this year (yay!) and a great opportunity to present your work.

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Josh Lee from Lynn Bowlby and the DOC team for his fantastic response to a critically ill patient at the DOC, to Lara Hayes from Dagmara Danek for excellent cross cover care of patients at the VA, to Francis Ugowe for a great SAR talk and to Sean Doerfler for a really outstanding chair’s conference on Friday. Many thanks to Lena Vaynberg, Sonali Bracken and Dan Turner for being our first “My Take” team, and to Mike Grant, Tamara Saint-Surin, Irena Tan, Daniel Turner, Lara Hayes and Daphne Xiao for volunteering to be tour guides. Kudos and thanks to all who worked on the night of daylight savings - the longest night of the year. Many thanks also to Peter Kussin for doing Friday Night Pizza Rounds!

PWIM "Before They Were Stars"
Join us for an evening with Dr. Kathy Cooney. This event is a casual Q&A format about career and personal paths and successes. It is open to all residents and fellows in the Department of Medicine. It will be Tues., Nov. 13 from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Med Res library (Duke North 8253).

Narrative Medicine
The next narrative medicine session will be held on Fri., Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Med Res! We are incredibly lucky to have Dr. G (or Dr. Anthony Galanos, to be formal about it) to precept our next meeting! Our prompt this session will be "Uncertainty." By choosing this theme, we hope to inspire you to think about the often morally grey, emotionally confusing, and intellectual no-man's land that we have to navigate, and we hope the broad nature of this theme allows you to be as creative as you would like. Of note, we are planning on collaborating with the Voices of Medicine group to potentially publish pieces based on this theme in their upcoming Spring publication, which may even lead to a multidisciplinary collaboration in the future! If you are interested in joining us, please send Irena Tan an email so we know how many to expect and can plan out how many narratives can be discussed. Dinner/drinks will be provided. To ensure a safe and intimate space, we are limited to ~12 participants so make sure to grab a spot!

Research Opportunities
The deadline for submitting an abstract for the NC Chapter of ACP is Dec. 15, 2018. The meeting will be held in Raleigh, Feb. 22-23, 2019. Scholarly activity can be in clinical research, basic research, clinical vignette, quality improvement and high value care. Learn more.

Duke Department of Medicine is accepting applications for the R38 Research Pathway for categorical internal medicine residents committed to a career as a physician-investigator in academic medicine. Applications are due Dec. 10, 2018. See details in email.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
