Internal Medicine Residency News, Nov. 9, 2020

From the Director

It’s the kickoff week of IM Residency Recruitment! Yes, its virtual. Yes, its different. Yes, we are still the BEST place to train! Yes, we still have the best residents, faculty, and staff! So, let’s bring it and show the applicants how amazing it is to be part  of the Duke Family! Not sure how you can help? Contact Kayla, and she can make sure you are signed up to participate in pre-interview zoom nights, My Takes, and more!

Kudos to IM RES DUKE for being 100 percent flu shot compliant!

SARs, time to get those fellowship rank lists in (don’t forget to register for the NRMP). Please let me know if you have any questions.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Geargin Wilson for an outstanding Cohen Conference (and a similar case was in NEJM this week, if you want to reinforce some teaching points!), to JD Davy on his excellent “TickTalk” SAR talk, to Nathan Hirshman from the RRT team for excellent leadership during a Code, to Daniel Bernstein from Priyanka Patel for a great call to a consulting team, to Annie Cavalier from Bari Rosenberg for intern class spirit, to Matt Goodwin from Matt Labriola for taking one for the team, to Jon Reichstein from Roshni Dhoot for modeling humanistic care, to Megan Barrett from the 9100 team for handling a busy night, and to Callie Berkowitz and Yoli Guzman for outstanding day-floating (from Steph Garbarino).

PubMed from the Program

Congratulations to Pickett attending Fatima Syed, assistant professor of medicine, the recently named associate director of the Primary Care Leadership Track! This is a program for medical students interested in primary care through longitudinal clinical experiences as well as community engagement. She takes over for previous associate director Bruce Peyser (also at Pickett).

Duke SCI-StARR Pathway
The Duke SCI-StARR pathway (Science Clinician Investigator - Stimulating Access to Research in Residency) supports protected time funded by an R38 award for research for residents in the Departments of Medicine who are committed to a career as a physician investigator in academic medicine. All Residents in the R38 SCI-StARR program will have a primary research mentor in either laboratory-based basic science research or clinical research.  In addition, a Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) will meet with each resident in the program at least twice per year and help the trainee create an individualized development plan. Application Deadline:  Nov. 30, 2020.
