From the Director

We are getting closer to the start of intern recruitment and can’t wait for you all to participate! Be on the lookout for emails from Kayla about signing up for dinners, tours, and “My Take” talks, as well as information about lunches during recruitment and how to know if people from your med school are coming to look at (the best residency program in the country) Duke IM!

This week, Drs. Hargett, Boggan and I are visiting Stanford IM Residency to learn about their program and bring back ideas for ours. We are excited to learn about things they do out here and look forward to continuous improvement in our program. Prior to that, I got in a quick visit to Dave’s hometown of Cleveland and was able to connect with a few of our Duke expatriates (see above) who are all doing well!

As we continue with Doctoberfest, we have “We Care” week – during this week, we forgo our resident lunches and donate to a charity chosen by YOU! Stay tuned for information on voting for this year’s winner. Also, please take time to sign up for the STEAD TREAD! It’s a great event for a great cause. Run, walk, rance (look it up on YouTube) but BE THERE!

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Austin Wesevich for his poster at ID Week poster (with former Duke residents Josh Thaden and Vance Fowler) that got a write up in the Infectious Diseases Advisor! Wesevich A, Sutton G, Fouts D, Fowler VG, Thaden J. Newly-named Klebsiella aerogenes is associated with poor clinical outcomes relative to Enterobacter cloacae complex in patients with bloodstream infection. Presented at: IDWeek 2019; October 2-6, 2019; Washington, DC, MD. Poster 221.

The 8th annual Stead Tread will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019 at 9 a.m. on the American Tobacco Trail (starting at Solite Park in Durham). All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
