Internal Medicine Residency News, Sept. 17, 2018

From the Director

Many thanks to all who have worked extra hard during the past 4 days of Florence to ensure that our patients get fantastic care and to help out colleagues who were stranded and unable to get into work. Your dedication and help is so much appreciated.

During the coming days and weeks, we will be hearing of many more opportunities to help, as the hospitals and communities who were hit very hard by Florence begin the long recovery. We will communicate with you all about patient care needs, as well as possible other ways to help the communities in our state that have been devastated by the storm.

We are looking at the calendar to reschedule our “Meet Dr. Cooney” night at Ponysaurus.  Stay tuned.

If you haven’t signed up yet for the Stead Tread, now is the time! You probably missed going for a run for a few days given the torrential downpours, so now is the time to get back at it!  Come out for a fun morning and support a great cause!

Kudos

In addition to kudos to everyone for their work this past week, more kudos go to Mike Murn for an awesome SAR talk on ABG’s, to Anthony Horton from Shannon Niedermeyer and Gen Med 2 for great work caring for some very sick patients overnight, to Chester Kao and Kim Cocce from Jenn Rymer for being amazing overnight CAD interns, to Hannah Dzmictrowicz from Winn Seay for great care of a patient at the DOC, to Jon Reichstein from Josh Lee for superior patient care and teamwork on VA Gen Med, and to Kristen Veal for “awesome rock star like work on VA gen med” as well as  Jeannette Yu (MS4) and Nick Drysdale (MS2) for their great work, all from Qasim Husseini. And kudos from Bryan Golubski to Taylor Triana for her support and to Wynn Hunter and Lara Hayes for their SAR level leadership and helpfulness at the VA, and to Bryan Golubski and Alex Reddy from Susanna Naggie for their fantastic teamwork on VA Gen Med.

Please send your big-time kudos to Lauren Sharan Ranard for being selected as this year’s Ruth Ann Greenfield Research Award winner in Cardiology! Congratulations Lauren!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Chris Pumill for his abstract “Cigarette Smoking in Patients With Heart Failure: A 20-Year Experience at Duke University Medical Center” that was accepted to the 2018 AHA Meeting!!

Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road

Contributed by Jeff Clough

There is plenty going on in and out of the clinic at Pickett Road. Dr. Boinapally and Dr. Shaw have been piloting a new model of care using encounter specialists as scribes to improve the efficiency of care. With the house staff, we are focusing on improving our process to schedule follow-up appointments. We continue to have plenty of fun with a well-attended pool party hosted by Dr. Peyser at the end of August and with our work culture committee keeping us well fed, celebrating a constant stream of national food-related holidays.  Balancing out those calories, Pickett expects to have strong representation in the Triangle Heart Walk and the Stead Tread in the coming weeks.
