From the Director

Congratulations interns on basically having your first 3 months in the books! As a med res team, we couldn’t be more proud of all the work each of you (interns, JARs and SARs) do each and every day. 

Lots happening in the program – don’t forget to take the stairs this week as you train for the Stead Tread on Saturday! It’s not too late to sign up and support your colleagues and the Lincoln Clinic.   Interested in helping out those who were affected by Hurricane Florence? A collection box will be set up in the Med Res Office starting tomorrow, and I will bring the donated items to a designated drop off point on Friday.  A list will be sent via email of what is needed. And of course, DOCTOBERFEST starts next week!  Trivia, treats, “we care Wednesdays,” get togethers and more! Be on the lookout for the DOCTOBERFEST event calendar.  Believe it or not, this is the 8th annual DOCTOBERFEST, and we will end the month with the RECRUITMENT KICKOFF PARTY!

Congratulations to Toi Spates and Dan Koback on their wedding this past weekend, a belated mazel tov to Johnny Komisar on his wedding two weeks ago, and to Jenny and Matt on their official wedding this weekend as well!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Important key points for new phone system starting Friday, Sept. 21:  Dial just a single 9 to get outside line.  To dial a VA extension (at main Durham VA) you will need to dial 1-7 and then the 4 digit extension.

Flu shots are here!  Our standard vaccine for patients under 65 is quadrivalent Afluria. Ages 65+ will by default receive Fluad which is an adjuvanted trivalent. For patients who are worried about their egg allergies, we do have egg-free Flublok which you will need to order.  Generally nurses will immunize patients on intake; if you see the flu reminder still on, that generally means the patient declined with the nurse, so please discuss flu immunization with the patient again and complete the reminder.  Patients can also take their VA card to any Walgreens to receive their flu vaccine; those records will populate in our system.

Shingles vaccine: There’s still a manufacturer shortage of Shingrix so we have not received an adequate supply. We still have Zostavax; patient should be counseled that if they receive Zostavax, the two dose Shingrix is still recommended in the future, so discuss options with patient.

PRIME’s social worker Ashley Witherspoon will be on maternity leave starting 9/26.  After that, Tinya Ramirez will be our main contact person to help with urgent PRIME patient issues. Please place a social work consult with any requests for care, questions to SW.

There are two new resources available within UpToDate: Pathways and Lab Interpretation. These provide a quicker view of algorithms for patient diagnosis and treatment. Try them out!

Leigh emailed an attachment we received for troubleshooting remote access problems for Mac. If you need that again, please contact her.  Hopefully everyone’s remote access is working now. If you still have problems, try calling the national help desk:855-673-4357, select option 2 for VHA, and then select option 3 for Region 3 support.

New Friday afternoon preceptor Ryanne Wu will be rejoining the PRIME team after three years in Singapore, where she worked at Duke-NUS. She received her undergrad degree from Duke before traveling down Tobacco Road to UNC for med school. She completed residency/chief residency at Georgetown before returning to Duke for a Health Services Research fellowship. Welcome back!

Video on Demand: VA is offering video visits to improve access to care for Veterans. Our nurses may use it for post-discharge calls. We are waiting for this to evolve in PRIME but if you have a patient you especially think would benefit from this, we can help arrange this; please talk to Leigh/Dr. Patel.

Now Accepting Applications for Global Health Elective Rotations
The Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health (HYC) is now accepting applications for Global Health Elective Rotations for the 2019-2020 year.
Application is open to Duke Cardiology Fellows (2nd & 3rd Year) and Duke residents from the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics:

Internal Medicine (PGY 2); Med-Peds (PGY 3); Med-Psych (PGY 4); Pediatrics (PGY 2).

Stead Tread 5K Fun Run/Walk
The 7th annual Stead Tread will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018 on the American Tobacco Trail (starting at Solite Park in Durham). Please access the Stead Tread 2018 website (http://www.steadtread.org) for important race information, to securely register ($30), or to make a donation. 100% of proceeds go to Lincoln Community Health Center. Your $30 registration fee includes an official Stead Tread 2018 T-shirt – register ASAP to reserve your size! Participants are welcome to run or walk, and strollers are permitted - kids under 12 walk/run for free (but should be registered by their parent/guardian).

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
