Internal Medicine Residency News, Sept. 7th, 2021

From the Director

It has been a busy week and we are on our way to several more quite busy weeks due to the ongoing COVID-19 surge here in NC as well as the many others who need care. We will continue to keep you updated on what is happening at Duke, Duke Regional and the VA. We appreciate all you are doing as well as the open lines of communication with leadership, the chiefs and ResCo. This is not what we wanted or hoped for during the fall months, so please be kind to yourself and to those around you. And always, our doors are open to check in.

It is WOMEN IN MEDICINE MONTH! We have a pretty awesome set of women role models around us, from med students, interns, residents, fellows, faculty, our GME staff and leadership team, our Chair, our Dean. We heard an awesome LEADs talk from Dr. Erica Taylor last Tuesday and are preparing for an upcoming talk highlighting women leaders and their supporters at Duke, led by our very own Dr. Dani Zipkin. Proud to be part of such a great Department as well as Health System.

ITE is coming to a close – thanks to our Med Res Office Team for proctoring and organizing! SARs, keep filling out the interview tracker and letting us know if you need a quiet office with good internet to interview.

Have you downloaded the ThanksRx app? If yes, keep on recognizing your colleagues for the amazing things they do! If you haven’t, please take a moment to download and get “thanks-ing!”  Yep. It’s a verb.

Super belated congratulations to LaShondra Arnold and Ibrahim Abubakar on the birth of Anas! We can’t wait to meet him (recruiting for the class of 2049).

Kudos
Kudos this week to Melanie Cabezas on her awesome Cohen Conference, Sarah Moserowitz (and the MICU team) from Kristi Styliadis RN for amazing teamwork caring for a very sick patient, to Kirsten Binz and Katrina Centner (via Tareq Aljurf) from Dr. Shelburne (VA Pathology) on the outstanding and thoughtful workup of a patient they cared for, to Zach Silver from JR Peacock for excellent patient care at the VA, to Aubrie Carroll from Emory Buck for spending many hours helping a family of a seriously ill patient, to the very impressive interns who got to work with Amanda Broderick this week (Sara Barlow, Matt Pisarcik, Tasnim Mushannen, Meg Sugita and Richard Morgan), to JT Tanaka for great work in the VA CICU from Peggy Sahu and also to Brian Rabe for his help in the VA CICU also from Peggy, and to Ryan Duffy from Felicia Cao for being a fantastic team player. Kudos to Melanie Cabezas, Brian Rabe, Hayley Cunningham, Allison Taylor, Audrey Zhang, Sara Barlow, Nathan Hirshman and Katherine Zhou for getting GOLD STARs from their patients recently!

Pipeline Teaching and Mentoring Opportunity at City of Medicine High School
We are excited to announce a new longitudinal  pipeline building rotation in the Medicine Residency! Your role is to work with your colleagues as teachers and mentors to students at the City of Medicine Academy High School located next to Duke Regional Hospital.

This was planned in collaboration with the COM High School Staff and our Department of Medicine Diversity Equity Inclusion and Anti-Racism Education Sub-Committee, including resident reps Ceshae Harding and Harsh Patolia. While the final details and schedule of the opportunity are still being worked out, we want to begin the application process so that when they are ready, we are ready!  In general, those selected would work at the COM Academy during half or full days during their +2 weeks or elective rotations.

Our first opportunity is to teach in the sophomore health science class. We envision pairs or triads of residents teaching for half days on their +2 blocks – this will take some coordination but we believe it is critical to have people regularly attending these sessions and handing off to the next “+2” group. This opportunity is available to all years (intern, JAR, SAR) For MedPeds residents, this could occur during the MedPeds ambulatory rotation (your PD will help with coordination). Notably, this opportunity to work with members of our community occurs DURING the work day, not after work.  Other less time intensive opportunities are anticipated in the future.

Click here for more information about the City of Medicine Academy HS. This health careers focused magnet school serves a predominately Black and Latinx student community, all of whom are planning careers in the health sciences. To apply to become a COM Academy Partner, please fill out the Qualtrics by SEPTEMBER 20th.  Selection process will be by our committee – exact numbers pend interest and scheduling.

2021 Stead Tread 5K Fun Run/Walk
You are invited to sign up to participate in the annual Stead Tread 5K fun run/walk on Saturday October 16th at 9:00 AM on the American Tobacco Trail in Durham.

We will start and finish the race at Solite Park and will have an award ceremony and hang out afterward. 100% of the proceeds from this race benefit Lincoln Clinic, which provides health care to the medically underserved population of Durham. Lincoln has been a huge asset to Durham for decades, but especially over this past year. So, I hope we can pitch in to raise money to help them out and show how much they are appreciated.  If you want to help but can’t participate in the race for whatever reason, you can help in other ways, just ask how you can get involved!

Registration is $30 (if you sign up before October 1st) which includes a fashionable T-shirt as well as race day snacks. Please invite your friends, significant other, and anyone else who might join. There will be prizes for:

  • Five fastest runners

  • Fastest Lincoln clinic patient

  • Fastest housestaff

  • Fastest faculty

  • Fastest runners under 12 years old

  • Most creative outfit

Please email Ryan Duffy if you have any questions or concerns ryan.duffy@duke.edu.
