Leaders grounded first in GIM

Have you noticed many health leaders have a strong foundation in general internal medicine?

Why GIM? Our core themes cover many essentials: the study of clinical epidemiology, direct patient care, issues in health policy, medical informatics, population science, methods and applications in Health Services Research, all critical building blocks for discerning leaders.

“Generalists are prepared to integrate research discoveries with health system innovations and generalists are primed to deliver equitable, ethical, value-based and evidence based care.” – L. Ebony Boulware, MD, MPH, Division Chief, Duke General Internal Medicine

Many of our members right now are honing their leadership skills within their clinics, within their research teams, and as respected educators of residents and medical students. Beyond Duke they have taken on responsibilities in our professional medical societies, some with positions as journal editors, a few as entrepreneurs translating science to mainstream, and many as partners for research in the community, the nation and around the world.

Here is a sampling of notables from Duke GIM, tapped by Duke and elsewhere. Let us know if we’ve missed others. #ProudtobeDukeGIM

From considerable literature about physician leadership, here’s extra reading about physicians in hospital administration:

This ref mentioned in a recent tweet by Dr. Matt Sparks @Nephro_Sparks: “Now That I Am a Hospital Executive” by Cam Patterson. Circulation. 2016.
