Earlier this month Dr. Nia Mitchell, GIM Assistant Professor, gave a presentation to members at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in the Obesity Health Disparities (OHD PRIDE) group. Their program is designed to Increase diversity among individuals engaged in health-related research.
During her presentation, Mitchell discussed possible hurdles researchers may come across throughout their career and ways to overcome them.
Hurdle 1: Fear of failure
Hurdle 2: Letting failure define you
Hurdle 3: Comparing yourself to others
Her advice?
- Don't compare yourself to someone else’s CV, it does not tell the whole story
- Do not let failure keep you down, it is part of the process
- Perseverance pays off
