Nilsson awarded R03 to study role of cytoskeletal proteins in premature senescence

Kent Nilsson, MD, MA, assistant professor of medicine (Cardiology), has been awarded a Grant for Early Medical/Surgical Subspecialists’ Transition to Aging Research (R03) from the National Institute on Aging. Dr. Nilsson's project focuses on a series of ethnic-specific mutations in a protein called ankyrin-B, which has previously been shown to be associated with a constellation of phenotypes associated with frailty, including sinus node dysfunction, atrial fibrillation and diabetes. As these mutations are disproportionately enriched in certain ethnic populations, the project hopes to help clarify racial differences in functional decline.
