Each year, in communities across the country, passionate candidates engage in an exciting competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Man & Woman of the Year" titles by raising funds for LLS blood cancer research. The candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year.
Stefanie Sarantopoulos, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine (Hematological Malignancies and Cellular Therapy), is in the last two weeks of her campaign as a Leukemia & Lymphoma Society "Triangle Woman of the Year." The deadline to make a donation is April 28.
Dr. Sarantopoulos is campaigning on behalf of Benjamin Byers, a now healthy 8-year-old, third-grader, who was successfully treated for leukemia.
“For me, caring for patients and pursuing scientific inquiry are inseparable,” Sarantopoulos said. “Our patients’ stories compel us to continue our hard work in the laboratory. However, I know without funds, research will not happen. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is an amazing organization whose mission is to fund breakthrough research.”
Sarantopoulos has noted that her current research and research as a fellow benefited from funding from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and she said she is raising funds to honor her dad Joe Sarantopoulos, who died of acute myeloid leukemia/myelodysplastic syndrome.
