Shah receives 2015 Functional Genomics and Epidemiology Mid-Career Research Award

Svati Shah, MD, associate professor of medicine (Cardiology), received the American Heart Association’s 2015 Functional Genomics and Epidemiology Mid-Career Research Award at the recent AHA Scientific Sessions meeting in Orlando.

The award recognizes a scientist who has made a lasting impact in epidemiology and functional genomics and translational biology. The winner receives a plaque and $1,500, and delivers a scientific lecture at the meeting.

Dr. Shah presented Metabolomics in Cardiometabolic Diseases: Form and Function.

Shah is a faculty member of the Duke Molecular Physiology Institute (DMPI). She is the lead author on a recent paper detailing a breakthrough in understanding cardiovascular disease. Shah and colleagues at DMPI used a multi-platform ‘omics’ approach to identify novel genetic markers in heart attacks and death from heart disease. This achievement has the potential to intercede for those with the marker and lower the risk of a major cardiovascular event.
