On Tuesday, October 9, Dr. Thomas Owens, President of Duke University Hospital, announced Kevin Shah, MD, MBA, as Duke Primary Care’s new "Associate Chief Medical Officer for Innovation and Improvement."
"This position is in recognition of Dr. Shah’s work within DPC and across Duke Health, and is effective immediately," stated Owens.
Over the past several years, Kevin has been instrumental in leading Duke Primary Care (DPC) efforts to improve value for patients. His work has focused on patients with chronic illness, on analyzing variation in imaging requests and specialty referrals, and activities related to population health. Shah directs DPC’s telehealth efforts, helping to create a successful E-Consult and video visit platform. He also leads a collaboration with our PDC colleagues to optimize the referral process.
More broadly, during his time at Duke, Dr. Shah has excelled at mentoring numerous physicians, residents, and medical students. Their efforts have been valuable for DPC and have also resulted in numerous posters and publications.
Shah is currently a Medical Instructor in the Division of General Internal medicine and sees patients at DPC South Durham. In 2015 he completed his internal medicine residency at Duke along with the "Management and Leadership Pathway". Kevin received his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine and Master of Business Administration degree from The Wharton School, both at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Shah is also a recipient of the Quality Improvement Award from Duke General Internal Medicine, announced Wednesday, October 10, 2018, during the annual DGIM Wine, Cheese, and Poster event.
