Staff Spotlight: Ashley Cabacungan

For this Spotlight we caught up with Ashley Cabacungan, a GIM staff member who joined our Division of General Internal Medicine in August of 2017. Ashley graduated from East Carolina University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health Studies and a concentration in Community Health.

We asked about her role before DGIM.
As an undergraduate I worked as a public health research assistant at East Carolina University. That's where I developed a passion for LGBT health disparities research with the guidance of my mentor, Dr. Joseph Lee, PhD, MPH.

What is your title?
Clinical Research Specialist, SR.

Tell us about your position with DGIM.
In addition to assisting in the preparation of abstracts, manuscripts, and grants for publication and submission, I create research posters and author manuscripts related to Dr. Ebony Boulware’s studies. I also help with coordinating weekly research lab meetings.

What do you enjoy most about working in our Division?
While working in the Division, I am enjoying the opportunity to expand my knowledge of the clinical research process, especially as it relates to chronic kidney disease and disparities.

What passions or hobbies do you have outside of the Division?
Outside of the Division, I enjoy creative writing, reading, and spending time with my loving fiancé, Mazi, and two pets, Bentley and Nagini.

What is a fun fact about you that people may not know?
People may not know that I have a passion for keeping and learning about reptiles, mainly snakes, and that I have a 3-foot (and growing) python named Nagini. We hope to continue to learn and educate others about snakes and grow our family scale by scale.

What is your favorite restaurant? Favorite food?
My favorite restaurant is Rock n’ Roll Sushi, as I could eat sushi for every meal!
