Kevin Thomas, MD, assistant professor of medicine (Cardiology), has received a grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The project budget is $2,039,132.
Dr. Thomas's project is Addressing Racial Disparities in Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Therapy Via Innovative Designs (VIVID) which will support a 480-patient randomized trial that compares the effectiveness of a patient-centered educational video with traditional healthcare-provider counseling among black patients at risk for Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD).
VIVID will study the following outcomes:
- The knowledge of SCD and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy;
- The decision for ICD implantation and associated decisional conflict, and ICD receipt within 90 days; and
- The impact of racial concordance between patients viewing the video and individuals (healthcare providers and patients) in the video on decisional conflict, the decision for ICD implantation, and ICD receipt within 90 days.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), an independent nonprofit, nongovernmental organization located in Washington, DC, was authorized by Congress in 2010. Its mandate is to improve the quality and relevance of evidence available to help patients, caregivers, clinicians, employers, insurers, and policy makers make informed health decisions. PCORI funds comparative clinical effectiveness research, or CER, as well as support work that will improve the methods used to conduct such studies.
