Reflections on the Duke Program
What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The biggest strength of the Duke Program is the people/sense of community within the Duke Family from co-interns and residents to faculty members and our colleagues in other specialties. I have found here that even the longest call days are filled with camaraderie and fun -whether it is simply taking a team coffee break and sharing pictures of cute animals or pausing work for quick 2 am yoga sessions (shout out to Yogi Sunny Chung).
What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
The faculty have a wonderful relationship with house staff. All of the faculty that I have worked have been incredibly invested in teaching and sharing their expertise while ultimately allowing us to come to our own clinical decisions. They provide a relaxed environment in which we are respected as colleagues. This creates a fantastic atmosphere where questions are encouraged, and the focus is on learning and helping patients!
Tell us about your co-fellows. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
My co-fellows are an amazing group of accomplished and compassionate individuals!
About Duke University and Durham
What has surprised you most about Duke?
I think I have been most surprised by how genuinely down to earth and approachable everyone is here. While I had experienced this on my interview day and it was a huge part of what brought me to Duke, I thought maybe it was too good to be true. I did not realize that it would extend to everyone here!
What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
So many things about living in Durham are wonderful! I think the best part is being able to affordably live close to wonderful outdoor activities (places to hike, run, kayak, etc) as well as the hospital, amazing restaurants, and other interns!
How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds?
Because the Triangle attracts people from around the country and the world, it offers something for everyone! There are amazing restaurants, grocery stores, and activities/events that I am just beginning to explore.
Where did you choose to live and why?
We decided to live in a townhouse just a 5 minute drive to the hospital, a little south of the Duke Golf Course. It is wonderful, affordable, and very convenient!
What are your interests outside of medicine?
I love playing soccer, having board game nights, kayaking, and occasionally making cheese!
