Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a program with outstanding clinical training paired with incredible faculty and research opportunities. I couples matched with my partner, who is in orthopedics, and we feel so lucky to have found a place that supports both of our professional goals.

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The people. From my co-interns to the senior residents to the attendings, everyone is truly incredible. Not only are they unbelievably good at caring for patients, they are truly exceptional people. I am so lucky to be a part of this Duke Fam!

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
Everyone is so willing to teach and learn from one another. It is refreshing to be on a first name basis with attendings and feel comfortable asking them any question.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
They are the best! We are all connected in such a unique way because of the training we all experience together. It’s special to be able to talk to my co-residents about any challenge or triumph, because they truly do understand.

What has surprised you most about Duke?
It was everything I hoped it would be. Having said that, I am continually surprised by how kind, humble, and genuine everyone is!

About Life in Durham

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
The access to the outdoors and bbq!

How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds?
I feel like there is a little bit of something for everyone in Durham. You really can find a group of people for just about any activity or interest you have!

Where did you choose to live and why?
We chose to live within 10 minutes of the hospital for easy access. However, we are far enough away to be close to Eno state park. Being outside is important for us and we can do that where we live in Orange County!

What are your interests outside of medicine?
Backpacking, camping, basketball (playing and watching), hanging out with family and friends.
