Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a place that felt like home, where I would get rigorous training while still having fun.

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The comradery between residents and the friendliness of fellows and faculty are one of the biggest strengths. You can ask anyone a question at any time and they will take the time to explain concepts to you. In addition, there are many specialized inpatient services which really lets you gain experience in these areas.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
Faculty and houses staff have great relationships. I don't feel like their is a hierarchy here. House staff and faculty work side by side and faculty really take into consideration our concerns. During my first solo shift in the CCU as a new intern, the faculty stayed with me the majority of the day to help with any issues that might arise. They really go the extra-mile.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
My co-residents are the best. Shortly after we matched we started a group chat and have been talking since. It has been great to get to know this diverse group of people.

What has surprised you most about Duke?
I was concerned that being at a place as prestigious as Duke that I would not fit in. However, everyone is always so down to earth and kind. I really feel part of the #DukeFamily

About Duke University and Durham

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
There are so many placed to explore from the mountains to the ocean to hiking to eating. It has a small town feel with all the big city perks.

How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds?
You really get a diverse group of house staff and faculty. They really work on getting people from all walks of life and it is evident.

Where did you choose to live and why?
I chose to live in an apartment building walking distance from the hospital. It's so nice because of the convenience and has giant floor plans for reasonable prices.

What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham?
It is really nice being within walking distance of the hospital so I think it is worth checking out if that is something you are into.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I love art including painting and drawing and am a major bookworm. I spend a lot of time with my cats and my fiancee. If we aren't watching Sci-fi on TV we are doing a puzzle. I also have recently gotten into baking and I'm working on perfecting different flavors of buttercream.
