I was looking for a program that combined clinical rigor with a supportive and enjoyable environment.
Reflections on the Duke Program
What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
Everyone has been so kind and willing to go out of their way to help you.. Anytime I have had a question, an upper level resident, fellow and/or attending has been readily available and eager to assist. This not only fosters great patient care, but also creates a fun and fruitful learning environment.
What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
Faculty take teaching to be a central part of their job and are here to support you in your growth as a physician in training. Faculty are very friendly and regularly check in to see how you are doing and how they can best help you care for patients.
Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
Truly the best part of starting residency was getting to know such an awesome group of people! It was great to be able to meet for hikes, dinner, various sports and grab a drink at brewery before starting residency and also during the year. It is so fun running into your friends at noon conference or on the wards and getting to share this experience with one another.
What has surprised you most about Duke?
How nice and down to earth everyone has been!
About Duke University and Durham
What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Durham is such a great place to live because its a medium-sized city, so you get the convenience of not having a lot of traffic or a high cost of living, but you also get a lot of the city perks like great restaurants, nearby museums and fun activities.
How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds?
The Triangle is a great place to live because people move here from all over the country and world to work for companies based out of Research Triangle Park as well as the many academic institutions in the area. Between Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh you can find options for housing, eating, and recreation that appeal to you.
Where did you choose to live and why?
I chose to live in the Ninth Street area because of the many restaurants and shops within walking distance and easy (~5-10 minute drive) commute to the hospital.
What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham?
It is a great place to live! There are several types of housing options (apartments, townhomes, houses) that are within walking distance or a short drive to the hospital. The weather is also great.
What are your interests outside of medicine?
I like to cook, exercise, try new restaurants/coffee shops and spend time outdoors with friends.
