Residency: University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD

Clinical and Research Goals:

I plan to pursue a career in clinical endocrinology, and have a particular interest in obesity medicine.

Reasons I chose Duke:

• The people are amazing! From medical students to renowned physician-scientists, everyone here just wants to learn from each other. The environment is incredibly collegial and supportive, and the importance of that as a fellow (or any trainee) cannot be stressed enough.
• Duke is Duke! You know you will get the best possible training here. Many patients travel 3+ hours to seek out the specialized and world-class medical care that is provided here. I knew I would see absolutely every endocrine condition here, and be truly ready to be an independent physician by the time I graduate.
• Durham is an incredible place to live. Forests and greenery abound, and the outer banks are not far either, so there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring the outdoors nearby. Not to mention the low cost of living – most of the fellows here live in houses, which is a big upgrade compared to the city apartment we were used to!

Happy surprises:

• Moving from a bigger city, I thought I would be living a ‘quieter lifestyle,’ with less to do in a somewhat smaller environment. After moving here, I have been so thrilled by the variety and number of restaurants, gyms, shops – anything you can dream of, it’s all here.
• The attendings here are so humble and incredibly kind people. I look up to them as professionals and as people.
• Our close relationship with the endocrine NPs and PAs here. They have so much to teach, and it has been a great experience learning from them. Every day runs so much smoother with their help and encouragement!
