Lewis appointed ACMO at Duke Regional Hospital

Sarah Lewis, MD, MPH has been appointed Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) of Duke Regional Hospital, effective March 1. 

As ACMO, she will lead the overall vision and oversight of clinical quality and patient safety programs across DRH. She will work closely with the Executive Leadership Team, physician and nursing leaders, and frontline team members to advance our culture of safety and continuous performance improvement. She will also continue to serve as medical director of Infection Prevention and Infectious Diseases Clinical Services. 

Dr. Lewis is an Associate Professor in the Duke Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, and the Duke Center for Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention. She is well-known in the DRH community, having joined the medical staff in 2013, and has served as medical director of Infection Prevention since 2014.

Additionally, she has helped lead the infection prevention response to the COVID pandemic for Duke University Health System and has previously served as a leader in infection prevention at Duke University Hospital and the Private Diagnostic Clinic. 

Dr. Lewis is known for her practical approach to problem-solving, thoughtful leadership, and ability to build successful cross-disciplinary collaborations. Some of her prior areas of interest include hospital-acquired surveillance methodology and the impact on public reporting, the use of the electronic medical record to improve diagnostic test utilization and infection prevention workflows, and outbreak investigation and mitigation. These skills and experiences will translate well to her new role as ACMO.
