The  Durham VA Center of Innovation to Accelerate Discovery and Practice Transformation (ADAPT) offers Advanced Fellowships in Health Systems Research (HSR). This two-year program provides board-eligible or board-certified physicians with the protected time for research to become successful investigators in health systems research.

Fellows collaborate with physician scientists and PhD investigators who have diverse and complementary backgrounds, including implementation science, qualitative and mixed methods research, evidence synthesis, engagement science, and comparative effectiveness research. Research focus areas include cancer, gastroenterology, congestive heart failure, stroke, mental health, diabetes, geriatric care, palliative and end-of-life care, women's health, and more. Both general medicine and subspecialty mentors are available to fellows. Faculty from Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill complement this diverse group of investigators.

Throughout their fellowship, fellows will work closely with a faculty mentor or mentors from the ADAPT Center at Durham VA Medical Center. Fellows will receive training in learning health system competencies as part of an interactive national virtual curriculum delivered by leading HSR and LHS leaders and scientists. Seventy-five percent of fellows' time will be protected for research.
