Andrew Alspaugh, MD
Kathleen Cooney, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine, announced that Andrew Alspaugh, MD, will serve as Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Medicine, and David Pisetsky, MD, PhD, has agreed to serve as Associate Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, effective April 1.
"As vice chair for academic affairs, Dr. Alspaugh will focus on the oversight of the Department’s appointment, promotion, and tenure process (APT) in conjunction with the associate vice chair for academic affairs," Dr. Cooney said.
In this new role, Alspaugh also will work with division chiefs in the creation of consistent processes around annual faculty performance evaluations that support faculty development and promotion; develop standardized and improved processes for the hiring and on-boarding of new
faculty; and implement a robust awards and recognition initiative.
"As associate vice chair for academic affairs, Dr. Pisetsky will continue his work overseeing and strengthening the Department’s appointment, promotion, and tenure process, including serving as a liaison to the School of Medicine APT committee," Cooney said.

These roles will complement the Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Diversity, Laura Svetkey, MD, MHS, and they report to the Chair of the Department of Medicine, working closely with other Department vice chairs, division chiefs, and program directors.
Alspaugh is a professor of medicine (Infectious Diseases) and molecular genetics and microbiology. He earned a B.A. from the University of North Carolina and his M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Vanderbilt University and served as chief resident there. He came to Duke for fellowship in infectious diseases, and he joined the faculty in 1998.
Alspaugh serves on the Department of Medicine Research Development Council and the Department of Medicine Faculty Development Academy (Basic Science Branch), and he is director of the Department of Medicine Research Seminar Series. He is the director of the Duke Strong Start New Physician-Scientist Award Program in the School of Medicine, and he has numerous teaching and research mentoring roles.
Pisetsky is a professor of medicine (Rheumatology and Immunology) and Immunology. He earned a B.A. from Harvard College and his M.D. and Ph.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed residency in internal medicine at Yale University and joined the Duke faculty in 1978, where he has served in leadership roles including chief of the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology, chief for the Rheumatology Section at the Durham VA Medical Center, and director of the Duke University Arthritis Center. He currently serves on several editorial boards.
