Angie Cain steps into newly created role in faculty affairs

Joseph Rogers, MD, interim chair of the Department of Medicine, announced the creation a new Office of Faculty Affairs, to be directed by Angie Cain.

Cain will transition from her role as HR/APT Manager in the Department of Medicine to serve as the Director of Faculty Affairs.

"This new role will be instrumental in assessing current and future gaps in faculty support across the Department and the School of Medicine, then operationalizing innovative solutions that facilitate your faculty appointment, from orientation through retirement planning," said Dr. Rogers.

Cain is charged with driving improved quality and processes, and ensuring greater support, in navigating the complexities of the faculty experience at Duke. Some key areas of her focus will be improving the onboarding and orientation process for new faculty; streamlining the Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure process; and ensuring easy access to resources and information.

The faculty affairs role is expected to complement and be highly collaborative with Laura Svetkey, MD, vice chair for faculty development and diversity.

"Dr. Svetkey and her team will continue to focus on faculty development and diversity programming (e.g., Faculty Development Academy, Program for Women in Medicine, Minority Recruitment and Retention Committee, and the Medicine Endeavor to Nurture Trainees to Research Success Program) and other initiatives," said Rogers.

Svetkey and Cain will work closely on filling gaps  and unmet needs. Cain also will work with David Pisetsky, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Medicine APT Committee, as well as the communications team in the Chair’s Office and the division administrators.

"Angie has been with the Department of Medicine since 2006, and she recently served as an interim division administrator in Cardiology," said Rogers. "She is eager to take on this new role, and I’m excited to see what she can help us achieve in the months ahead."
