Michael Burt, MD, senior assistant resident in the Duke Internal Medicine Residency Program, has been selected to serve as the Durham VA Medical Center Chief Resident for Quality and Safety (CRQS) for 2021-22.
During his chief resident year, Dr. Burt will be part of a network of such chief residents across the country who lead quality improvement (QI) projects and receive expert training from mentors. He also will participate in a national curriculum designed to prepare a new generation of QI leaders able to help residents implement QI initiatives.
“Mike has distinguished himself during residency, and we look forward to working with him as he takes on incremental QI and patient safety responsibilities,” said Kathleen Cooney, MD, MACP, Chair of the Department of Medicine. “He will be a tremendous asset to the training program, and I look forward to working with him.”
Burt is the 10th Duke internal medicine resident to hold the chief resident for quality and safety role at the Durham VA.

We anticipate he will make a great impact as the next CRQS, and we look forward to having him as part of our leadership team,” said Aimee Zaas, MD, MHS, program director, Duke Internal Medicine Residency, and professor of medicine (Infectious Diseases).
Burt will work closely with Joel Boggan, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine (General Internal Medicine) and CRQS mentor; David Simel, MD, Chairman of Medicine at the Durham VA; and previous and current chiefs, including Ryan Schulteis, MD, and Govind Krishnan, MD.
"I am deeply humbled and incredibly excited to step into this role,” said Burt. “This year will allow me to build a knowledge base in data analytics and inpatient QI implementation. I look forward to translating these skills in my pursuit of a career in academic hospital medicine."
Burt earned his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and medical degree from the University of Kansas.
Burt will begin as chief resident for quality improvement and patient safety in July 2021. He will join 2021-2022 chief residents Jessica Regan, MD; Dennis Narcisse, MD; and Nancy Yang, MD. After his year as chief resident, Burt plans to pursue a career in Hospital Medicine.
