Celebrating DOM Administrative Heroes

The Duke Department of Medicine deeply values its administrative professionals and the significant impact that they have on our daily operations. In honor of Administrative Professionals Day on Wednesday, April 23, we are celebrating our administrative heroes who goes above and beyond the call of duty.

We recognize and appreciate our administrative support professionals who are central to our department's success.

Join us in honoring them and their valuable contributions to the department’s ongoing success.

Meet our Administrative Heroes

Amy Loeblein, Administrative Assistant, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
Nominator: Dr. Laurie Snyder

Amy has been with the pulmonary division for many years and worked with many different faculty. She is always willing to help- whether clearing charges, scheduling a room for a meeting or coordinating multiple schedules in order for a group to meet. She is the primary point of contact for all faculty and staff in pulmonary who work in MSRB2-- ordering office supplies to calling for a repair. She is a great communicator- notifying us if she is out of the office or unavailable for a period of time.

Alexia Daniels

Alexia Daniels, Assistant Clinical Administrator, Gastroenterology
Nominator: Jennie Slate
It is my pleasure to nominate Alexia Daniels for recognition of her exceptional contributions to our division’s clinical operations. Alexia is the steady, skilled presence behind so many of our successful initiatives—someone whose institutional knowledge, quiet support, and unfailing reliability make her an essential part of our administrative infrastructure.

Alexia consistently delivers high-quality work with a calm confidence that reassures everyone around her. She has been the anchor during periods of transition, including the onboarding of new team members, coordination of operational initiatives, and implementation of major operational changes. Her mastery of the nuances of clinic workflows and system processes allows her to spot and solve problems before they escalate. She is the person I rely on when I need things done correctly—and done with grace.

What makes Alexia truly special is the way she operates with humility and purpose. She doesn’t seek the spotlight but quietly ensures that everything keeps moving forward. She is patient, thoughtful, and always responsive. I have seen firsthand how her calm demeanor and deep institutional experience have brought clarity in the face of complexity. Her influence is felt throughout our division. Alexia is someone I trust implicitly. Her consistency, judgment, and dedication make her one of the most valuable people I work with. She elevates every project she touches, and I can’t imagine our administrative team functioning without her. She deserves this recognition, not just for what she does—but for the way she does it.

Alex Reaves, Provider Support Assistant, Endocrinology
Nominator: Patrick Cacchio, PA
Alex is the engine that helps keep our metabolic bone clinic running smoothly. She is always willing to help and persistent in her efforts. Our patients appreciate her timely and professional correspondence, and our providers are appreciative of all her work to coordinate schedules and records. Simply put, our clinics would not be able to run efficiently without Alex's support.

Christy Dixon, Division Administrator, Infectious Diseases
Nominator: Maria Blasi, PhD
Christy is always quick in answering my requests and help me navigate administrative hurdles. I have seen her juggle a wide variety of tasks in the past year and she always does it with a smile.

Tatiana

Tatiana Teofilo Scipiao Araujo, Advanced Grants & Contracts Administrator, DOM CRU
Nominator: Antonina Soshnikova, PhD
When Tatiana joined the Medicine CRU in December 2023, she brought with her a deep commitment to our mission. She not only demonstrated lightning speed in the onboarding process and high independence in performing job responsibilities but also developed and incorporated site costs reconciliation trackers, a tool for ensuring accuracy and consistency in financial records, to all her studies. This site costs reconciliation tracker was further adopted across the whole Medicine CRU and presented to other CRUs as well as helped to recover $500K+ of missed revenue.

In addition to that, Tatiana successfully: - negotiated $400k+ of revenue in past due invoices; - closed all the "old studies," some of them with 600+ days past due IRB closure date, which caused a significant challenge in research compliance metrics; - reconciled all trial trackers, bringing the era of the trail tracker to an end in the division of gastroenterology.

In addition to her outstanding performance within her assigned job responsibilities, Tatiana took an extra step. She developed a unique subject visit finance reconciliation form. This tool streamlined financial reporting for subject visits, which became a basis for the development of the coding task for the OnCore reporting system. It was taken up to the School of Medicine finance team to discuss further with Advarra for automatization.

Tatiana's efforts extended beyond her job responsibilities. She took it upon herself to introduce diversity and cultural awareness to the team, many of whom had never traveled outside of the U.S. Her initiative to host a Brazilian BBQ party at her house, where she cooked traditional Brazilian dishes and shared stories about Brazil, not only built cultural awareness but also fostered team spirit and cohesiveness. This initiative has become a great tradition of the CRU team's quarterly get-togethers.

Jennifer Kajcienski, Administrative Assistant, Hematology

Brooke

Heather "Brooke" Taylor, Special Assistant, Medical Oncology
Nominator: Carey Anders, MD; Gerard Blobe, MD; Alexandra Thomas, MD; Hope Uronis, MD, John Strickler, MD; Pamela Keels

Brooke is simply amazing! This is due to her “can do” attitude, desire to learn more, capacity to multitask and prioritize, and her overall calm demeanor. She is extraordinarily reliable. Her dedication to her faculty, colleagues and peers is top notch. She leads by example, coaches, encourages, and builds the team so everyone can excel in their work. She gives thoughtful attention to the details of her everyday work and applies critical and creative thinking to unexpected challenges. Her greatest contributions are perhaps in how she functions at a level above all and truly keeps the trains in our complex system running on time.
