Dean Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, and Vice Dean for Medical Affairs Theodore Pappas, MD, sent a note to School of Medicine faculty alerting them to the new Promotional Medical Education Policy (also known as the “Speakers Bureaus policy”).
This policy governs non-CME promotional education activities, to be certain that School of Medicine faculty members provide education that is in the best interest of the public and independent from commercial interest. It is important to keep medical education separate from product promotion. The timing of this new policy coincides with new federal guidelines governing Promotional Medical Education (commonly referred to as the “Sunshine Law" ).This Duke School of Medicine Promotional Medical Education Policy will officially take effect on May 1, 2012. The policy and accompanying FAQs are posted on the School of Medicine Research Integrity Office page.
