Dean requests nominations for Master Clinician/Teacher Award

By ajz6@dhe.duke.edu
Dean Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, and Vice Dean for Medical Education Edward Buckley, MD sent the following message to School of Medicine faculty, fellows, residents and students. We are soliciting nominations for the Master Clinician/Teacher Award, which is a class of awards to faculty that has been created for the purpose of honoring individuals for superlative accomplishment and service in the area of Medical School/Medical Center teaching. The intent is to honor those individuals who have made an extraordinary commitment to teaching, “above and beyond” normal expectations, and who you might consider an “unsung hero” in teaching at Duke. Nominees must hold a faculty appointment in the Duke University School of Medicine. (Nominations/comments from trainees are especially valued.) Examples of nominees might include course directors, clinic rotation directors, ward or clinic attending physicians, basic science instructors, small seminar directors, participants in strategic planning for medical school or post-graduate curriculum, promotion or admissions committee members, residency education committee members, year directors, educational innovators, developers of web-based learning tools, and/or participants in programs to place students in research laboratories. Dan Sexton, MD, professor of medicine (Infectious Diseases), received the 2011 Master Clinician/Teacher Award. The review committee members along with Dr. Buckley will recommend candidates to the Dean who will make the final selections. The awardee is expected to make a presentation to the Medical Alumni Council concerning their work on behalf of medical education. We wish to keep the initial nomination process simple and nominator-friendly, and request that you simply submit a one page (no more) nomination letter, by e-mail, simply stating why your nominee is deserving of this award for extraordinary commitment to medical education. Please submit letters to Theresa Harris at theresa.harris@dm.duke.edu  by Mon., Feb. 6, 2012.
