Department offering mock review of career development awards

By ajz6@dhe.duke.edu
Laura Svetkey, MD, vice chair for faculty development/affairs and diversity, has announced a new initiative to offer Medicine faculty and senior fellows pre-submission review of career development awards. Several senior members of the faculty have kindly offered to help. This input is intended to supplement the guidance of your primary mentor, who is likely to agree that more is better when it comes to pre-submission review of a grant application. Svetkey will match applicants with a senior faculty reviewer in the Department of Medicine. This person may not do research in your field, but he or she will have lots of experience with grantsmanship that can be useful regardless of the scientific questions or methods. Faculty and senior fellows planning to submit a career development award (to NIH, VA, or other funding source), and who would like to get this input should send the following information to Dr. Svetkey (svetk001@mc.duke.edu) or LaVerne Johnson-Pruden (lj.pruden@duke.edu):
  1. Your name, division and rank
  2. Name of the primary mentor on the proposal
  3. Funding source
  4. Type of grant (e.g., K23)
  5. Due date
  6. Very brief description of the aims and design of the proposed research project (1-2 sentences, max)
PLEASE NOTE: ONLY GRANTS WITH DEADLINES OF JULY 1, 2012 OR LATER CAN BE ACCOMMODATED AT THIS TIME. To insure adequate time to get feedback, requests are due by May 1. "I look forward to receiving lots of requests," says Svetkey. "I hope you will find this a helpful service."
