DGIM @ REDCap Day: Sept 26th

Our Division of General Internal Medicine uses a remarkable research software application, one that’s useful for both research and for administrative tasks. The software is REDCap, which stands for “Research Electronic Data Capture”.

Megan Churchill invited to present for REDCap Day @ Duke

Our power user is the DGIM Program Director, Megan Churchill (pictured right). Megan has refined the GIM faculty database so that she can easily survey members and she can pull relevant academic reports. The success has caught the attention and interest of other REDCap users and Megan was invited to present our experience with this advanced function on September 26 for REDCap Day @ Duke. Registrants so far number 260 from across the medical center.

How REDCap works for DGIM

REDCap assists in collecting pertinent appointment and promotion documents for the faculty appointment and utilizes the data collected to report out the demographic make-up and rank distribution of the division at various meetings throughout the year.  Each year DGIM requests faculty to update their information pertaining to their faculty appointment, biographical information, work location, home address, and any other pertinent information to maintain accuracy of reports.

Basically, REDCap provides a historical electronic record for each faculty member tracking their career from original appointments through promotions, transitions, & terminations.

Really, what is REDCap?

REDCap is a secure web-application. Key features readily get attention of researchers – it’s freely licensed and secure, even meets regulatory compliance for HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, and FISMA standards. And, importantly for our division, REDCap can help us securely manage online surveys and databases.

REDCap was created in 2004 at Vanderbilt University. Since the REDCap Consortium launched in 2006 partnerships have expanded to more than 3000 sites and 127 countries. Our DTMI led involvement for Duke researchers. Learn more about REDCap @ Duke. The event September 26 is an opportunity to learn more. Megan's presentation will begin at 2:30 pm in the Trent Seman's Great Hall.
