DGIM Welcomes Dr. David Casarett, New Chief of Palliative Care Services

The Division of General Internal Medicine welcomes David Casarett, MD, MA, as the new Chief of Palliative Care. Dr. Casarett relocated from the University of Pennsylvania where he was Professor of Medicine and Director of Hospice and Palliative Care.

Dr. Casarett’s work focuses on improving systems of care for people with serious, life-threatening illnesses. He is the author of more than 100 articles in journals including JAMA and The New England Journal of Medicine, and his writing has appeared in print and online in Salon, Esquire, Discover, and Wired.

Casarett holds a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and master’s degree in medical anthropology from Case Western Reserve University. He completed the MD degree from Case Western Reserve University and subsequently became Chief Resident in Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals. After residency he pursued a fellowship in palliative medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Casarett is a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor given by the U.S. government to researchers in the early stages of their careers.
