On Wed., June 5, 2013, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University will be hosting “Documenting Medicine,” which is a program that produces documentary work exploring medical stories.  The event is open to the public and will take place from 6-8 p.m. “Documenting Medicine” provides documentary training, equipment and mentoring to interested physician residents who wish to use documentary to better understand and communicate the needs of their patients. Duke physician residents and fellows are paired with documentarians at Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies to produce small documentary projects over the course of nine months. These projects are then shared in Grand Rounds, conferences, poster sessions, exhibits, community educational events and other venues. The residents have worked hard and rigorously to aggregate stories that are near and dear to the hearts of their patients. Amongst the thirteen residents that will be presenting are:
  • Mallika Dhawan, MD (JAR), The Difference Between Sympathy and Empathy
  • Lisa Jones, MD (Gastroenterology Fellow) I Will Go With You:Patsy’s Mission to Educate Others About Colorectal Screening
  • Lidia Vogner, MD (Geriatrics, Palliative Care) Elder Abuse: Suffering in Silence
  • Maria D’ Souza, MD (Geriatrics Fellow) What Is It Like, and
  • Elizabeth Bigger,  MD (Hematology/Oncology Fellow)  Financial Toxicity as a Consequence of Cancer Care
A previous documentary that was done by Monique Anderson MD (Cardiovascular Disease Fellow) titled, Surviving Cardiac Arrest: A family’s Second Chance At Life, is an example of the extraordinary platform that this program has given to patients and residents for sharing their stories.
