ASIP honor recognizes her leadership and impact in liver disease research

Anna Mae Diehl, MD, Florence McAlister Distinguished Professor of Medicine and director of the Duke Liver Center, has received the Rous-Whipple Award from the American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP), one of the organization's highest honors.
The award recognizes a senior scientist with a distinguished career in research who has advanced the understanding of disease through impactful science, mentorship and leadership in the field.
Dr. Diehl was recognized during the ASIP Pathobiology 2026 meeting in Fort Myers, Florida, where she delivered an award lecture titled“Pros and Cons of Livering Longer."
An internationally recognized physician-scientist, Dr. Diehl leads pioneering research in liver injury, regeneration and metabolic liver disease. Her work has significantly advanced understanding of conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and liver fibrosis, with sustained support from the National Institutes of Health and broad impact across translational and clinical research.
In a statement shared with ASIP, Diehl said she was honored to receive the award, noting its namesakes’ legacy of discovery that reshaped medical practice and improved human health.
The ASIP Meritorious Awards are presented annually to recognize outstanding achievements in experimental pathology, including research, teaching and leadership across all career stages.
