Update: The deadline for the Faculty Flex Voucher Pilot Program has been extended to Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. Interested faculty must contact their desired service provider in advance of application to discuss their project. Deadline to contact service providers is Nov. 9.
The School of Medicine has announced a call for applications for the Faculty Flex Voucher Pilot Program.
"Junior faculty members are often faced with the critical challenge of jump-starting their careers at the same time that family/childcare obligations are least flexible," said Ann Brown, MD, MHS, vice dean for faculty and associate professor of medicine (Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition).
The Faculty Flex Voucher Pilot Program was created to address that challenge, added Dr. Brown.
Faculty Flex Vouchers are designed to be used in a wide variety of ways by connecting junior faculty members with high quality academic services that facilitate their engagement in scholarly work. Vouchers can be used for institutional services available through the Duke Office of Clinical Research (DOCR), the Communications Publications Services group at the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI), and the Medical Center Library.
Vouchers will be awarded for services up to $2,500. Faculty must meet with the desired service provider prior to submitting their application to discuss the proposed project.
Application deadline for the 2015 program is Fri., Nov. 6, 2015.
Faculty Flex Vouchers are available to regular rank School of Medicine faculty in the basic and clinical sciences who are within the first 10 years of their faculty appointment and who do not have tenure. All faculty members who meet this criteria and feel they would benefit from this additional support are welcome to apply, however, proposals from faculty with acute work-life balance obstacles will be given special consideration.

Important dates for the fall 2014 Faculty Flex Voucher Pilot Program:
- Applications Open: Sept. 28, 2015
- Deadline for pre-application meetings with service providers: Oct. 30, 2015
- Applications Close: Nov. 6, 2015
- Voucher Start: Jan. 1, 2016
- Voucher End: June 15, 2016
Applications must include a brief (<300 word) description of the project to be completed, a statement of personal need, the applicant’s CV/biosketch, and a short form signed by the service provider attesting to the availability of the services requested. A letter of support may be required depending on the services requested. Applications are limited to one per person per cycle, with an overall limit of two vouchers across time.
